This is a 7DCC 3SPA post to support the development of Emergency Medicine at SBUHB. It forms part of a consultant recruitment plan to enhance the current workforce of 18.3 wte consultants leading the Emergency Department at Morriston Hospital, with a trajectory of 24 wte. Following a major workforce review the Healthboard is committed to enhancing the senior team further to allow a gold standard, consultant delivered service, supported by robust middle and junior decision maker tiers. Main duties of the job
You will provide a clinical service, with colleagues, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
Working with consultant colleagues and the multi-professional team you will have continuing responsibility for the well-being of all patients under your care allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff. In partnership with clinical and managerial colleagues you will also have responsibility for the safe, efficient and effective functioning of the services in which you work in line with the values, operational policies and integrated medium term plan (IMTP) of the Health Board. You are encouraged to consider how services can be improved and to report any concerns about safety.
About us
The Emergency Department at Morriston Hospital is the major unit for South West Wales seeing more than 80,000 new patients per year and around 6,000 follow-ups. Due to surrounding minor injury units, there is an emphasis at Morriston on major trauma and serious medical presentations. The unit benefits from the on-site support of all major specialties with ophthalmology, neonatology and obstetrics & gynaecology located on the Singleton hospital site in Swansea and neurosurgery provided at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
The Emergency Department underwent significant changes during 2020 and now supports a Children's Emergency Unit, a dedicated area that includes separate reception, waiting room, 1 triage room, 1 triage / CAMHS assessment room, 4 minors trolleys, 6 majors trolleys including two cubicles and an HDU bay. The resuscitation bay is currently shared, within the main 5 bedded resuscitation area. The adult department currently includes 2 resuscitation areas to allow for infection control separation, 3 walk-in triage and initial assessment rooms, 15 trolley spaces (including 5 cubicles), 7 ambulatory spaces, a dedicated mental health room, plaster room and procedure room. There is a separate ENP run minor injury stream with an area that includes reception, waiting space and 4 clinical rooms. These rooms are also used for our review clinics, by our physiotherapy practitioners and our dedicated occupational therapists.

Job responsibilities
You will be required to participate in the Health Boards risk management process, clinical governance and any other healthcare governance activities within the department, the Service Group and the Health Board. Adherence to the Caldecott Principles of information governance is mandatory.
You will be required to maintain a license to practice through revalidation, to undergo satisfactory annual appraisal using the all Wales online Medical Appraisal Scheme (MARS) and to formulate a Personal Development Plan, in conjunction with the Clinical lead, to identify training and development needs. You will be expected to participate in sufficient personal and professional development to fulfill Royal College and GMC requirements. You will also be required to undergo a job plan review at least annually and to agree and then meet service outcomes.
You will be expected to make a significant contribution to the service and Directorateplanning process through active participation in the clinical Service Group structure.
You will participate in the Emergency Medicine Consultant twelve week rolling rota. There is a mixture of early, middle and late finishes and currently 1:6 weekends with 2-3 consultants being on each weekend. Bank holidays are shared equitably between consultants. All out of hours work attracts enhanced hours equivalents.
