We are looking to recruit a senior officer in our recovery team dedicated to the collection and recovery of Council Tax, Business Rates and BIDs invoices.

We have recently expanded our Revenues and Benefits Service and this is an exciting opportunity to be involved in shaping the team for the future.

The post is full-time, permanent role leading and directing a very busy team alongside the existing senior recovery officer.

The Revenues and Benefits Service is a large team working together to collect £347 million of corporate revenue to help the Council provide vital services to Dorset residents.

What you can expect to be doing:
We are passionate about providing an excellent service to our communities supporting customers in often difficult and challenging times.

As the leader of a team, you will monitor workloads whilst advising on all aspects of the collection and recovery of Council Tax, Business Rates and BIDs.

Implementing and complying with statutory legislation, policies and procedures, whilst providing a high-quality customer service.


Your daily work will be varied and will range from team supervision, work allocation and monitoring to dealing with complex legislative queries and some of the most challenging customers.

You will advise and support the team and will promote and champion efficiency to maximise performance and income. You will hold regular 1-2-1 meetings and manage the ongoing training of officers identified from within the appraisal system.


The role involves resolving and responding to complaints from customers which can be face to face, over the telephone, and in writing in a professional, courteous and informative way.

You will liaise with outside agencies such as the enforcement agent, support agencies and Court service.

You will prepare cases and advocate in Magistrates court hearings using an excellent understanding and knowledge of legislation for the various disciplines.

You will provide advice, guidance and explanation, signposting customers for further ongoing support and recognising the need to safeguard individuals including cases of mental health, severe vulnerability and financial difficulties whilst managing customers of a challenging nature.

You will need to provide information to customers on all aspects of insolvency and debt advice.


You will be working in all aspects of Council Tax, Business Rates and BIDs collection and recovery, including updating and accurately maintaining data and customer accounts using our main systems.

We use Capita's Academy System supported by our document management system Enterprise.

We work in a fully collaborative and supportive team and wider service.

There are opportunities to work in a hybrid way however there will be an expectation to work in the office to train and mentor and perform certain administrative tasks.


Future development is supported with access to training and development including consideration for professional qualifications through the professional body of the IRRV.

You must be a superb communicator and negotiator able to deliver messages to a range of customers and officers alike.

You must be able to draw on legislation and case law in your responses and look to maximise income whilst using all prescribed recovery remedies.


We are looking to appoint a dynamic, capable senior officer with proven people management skills and experience the recovery of debt.

You will be proficient in handling a wide range of highly sensitive data and have the ability to communicate complex information in easy-to-understand Plain English.
