Ibk is a community based, not-for-profit social enterprise with over 20 years' experience of providing Direct Payment Support to families, children and adults of all ages with a range of needs. We run a successful befriending service, providing bespoke support to young people under 18 to lead happy and independent lives.
IBK are helping a family in recruiting a befriender for their so for 8 hours a week.


The role of a befriender will mean supporting the young person to be more confident around others and build their independence in social situations.


Being a befriender will involve taking the young person outside his usual family unit allowing him to develop his confidence by having someone to talk to and to share new experiences with.

This young person struggles at school and has vocalised he feels lonely, it is hoped a befriender can become a role model as well as a companion.


This young person is 16 years old and has a diagnosis of psychosis which has resulted in him requiring hospital stays in the past.

He can become paranoid at times and when unwell quite verbally aggressive although calm and measured when he is well.

He responds well to reassurance and support though and befrienders would play a key role in helping him to feel calm and supported.

The young person has lots of interests including football, going to the gym and learning to ride his bike. He is good at maths and languages and enjoys speaking in both English and Farsi. Hi family mean the world to him


Person Specification:

Essential

  • Experience of supporting someone who Mental Health difficulties including anxiety and psychosis
  • Willing to learn from the young person and his family
  • Be friendly and reliable
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Be respectful in the family home
  • Be creative in your personal approach
  • Have a genuine desire to enhance the young person's life and boost their self confidence in social situations

  • An understanding of the nature of this type of support work
  • Things in common with the young person; you may share interests and hobbies which you can share
