We are now looking for an
Africa Correspondent to report on stories from across Africa for all Guardian and Observer platforms, including daily news and analysis, news features, multimedia material, and material for non-news sections as required.


We're particularly looking for someone who can find stories that go beyond the old stereotypes of war/famine/disaster reporting, to cover culture, social issues, business and innovation, among other things.


We expect the successful applicant to be based in a major transport hub in West, East or Southern Africa.

About the Role

  • Commission and write news stories at short notice with quick turnaround
  • Research and commission travel features
  • Assist in the smooth running of the travel desk
  • Commission multimedia story forms such as photo essays and audio features
  • Nurture relationships with columnists and outside contributors

About You

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of Africa's populations
  • Strong track record of reporting and feature writing
  • Fluency in French, or other languages spoken across the continent, would be an advantage
  • Good understanding of requirements of international correspondents
  • Prior journalistic experience, working in a fastmoving news environment, preferably for a major newspaper or website
  • Range of contacts
  • Ideally, you'll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
