Research Fellow in Spin Currents and Ferroelectric Coupling:

Job description

  • The School of Mathematics & Physics at Queen's University Belfast, is currently seeking to appoint an exceptional Research Fellow to join the EPSRC Programme Grant (EP/X027074/1) Combining Advanced Materials for Interface Engineering (CAMIE). This is a collaboration between the University of Leeds (UoL), Imperial College London (ICL) and Queen's University Belfast (QUB).
  • The specific position at QUB mainly involves using nitrogenvacancy (NV) centre microscopy to map and interpret spatial and timevarying nanoscale magnetic field patterns in functional materials and thin film heterostructures. Field information will be used to establish new insights into spinrelated transport physics in conducting domain walls in ferroelectrics (those which support strong polarisation discontinuities) and the way in which electricmagnetic dipole coupling interactions might affect magnon propagation in materials such as YIG. The role will also help support highresolution nanoscale mapping of magnetic fields in other materials systems relevant to the rest of the CAMIE consortium.
  • Obtained a PhD (or will have submitted your thesis before taking up the role) in condensed matter physics or a closely allied discipline.
  • Experience in experimental techniques relevant for nanoscale or thin film functional materials research, in particular magnetism, ferroelectricity or functional molecular materials.
  • A strong background in at least one of the following: thin film synthesis, microscopy of functional materials, magnetic/structural characterisation, charge or spin transport.
  • A developing track record of peerreviewed publications in international journals.
  • This post is available on a fixed term contract for 36 months, with a possible extension to 60 months.**
  • At Queen's our people are at the heart of everything we do. As a staff member you will become part of a vibrant organisational culture, which will provide you with the opportunity to achieve your full potential and enhance your career through a continuous focus on learning and development.
