About us:


The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of all forms of portraiture of the people who have made or are currently contributing to British history and culture; the collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world.

With around 2 million visitors each year prior to temporary closure for the _Inspiring People _project and a strong national and international presence through touring exhibitions and special projects, the Gallery is one of the country's most important and popular galleries.


The role:

We are recruiting for a motivated and experienced individual to join us as a Collections Registrar.


The post holder will lead and manage all day-to-day registrarial procedures relating to the acquisition of new works and loans entering into the Primary Collection.


The post-holder also has responsibility for managing, planning and overseeing all aspects of day-to-day Primary Collection move logistics to and from stores or within buildings.


Once the Gallery has re-opened, the post-holder will co-ordinate and be responsible for the ongoing logístical management of the Gallery's on-site changing displays programme, working with other key stakeholders and teams as appropriate.


Key Skills and Criteria:


  • It is fundamental that they have experience of working in an Exhibitions, Collections or Registrars department within another museum or heritage institution. As such, they will have experience and knowledge of preparing and managing fine art or museum objects for acquisition, installation, deinstallation, transport and storage.
  • The post holder will also be handling a range of public enquiries and key projects, it is therefore vital that they have excellent communication skills and are able to communicate information clearly and concisely to specialists and nonspecialists across all levels within the Gallery and externally.
  • The role is busy and varied so it is important that the post holder has strong organisational and scheduling skills with the ability to prioritise, manage and coordinate a heavy workload and work to tight deadlines. Whilst ensuring meticulous attention to detail.

Interviews will take place on w/c 7th/8thJune 2023 on Microsoft Teams.
