About us...
***We're on an exciting journey to create a simpler, better railway for everyone in Britain. Our people and culture are at the heart of this - we're bringing together a wide/diverse range of people from across the rail sector and from other industries to help shape the future of Britain's railway.

Joining the Great British Railway Transition Team (GBRTT) truly is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to be a part of something purposeful and revolutionary, where you can develop your skills and experience.

We believe people should be their authentic selves at work and be able to thrive, bringing unique experiences, fresh perspectives, and creative thinking to challenge conventional ways of doing things.

If you're up for an exciting challenge and like the sound of what we're looking for then we'd love to hear from you

What we're looking for....
***We're looking for people who are prepared to roll their sleeves up and take ownership, making it their place to make informed decisions and get things done. We need to work together as an industry to design solutions that make things better for our customers, so we're looking for people who can build great relationships and integrate with colleagues across the sector. We have a unique chance to change things for the better, and so embracing opportunity, using innovative and creative thinking - with a dose of healthy challenge - is critical to us. We're driven by a passion to deliver for our customers and our colleagues, so people who show they care deeply about their work and for their colleagues are the kind we love and are looking for

A bit about the team.
***The Strategic Planning team are developing a long-term strategy with the industry to outline how the railway can contribute to key public priorities, such as decarbonisation, economic growth, financial sustainability, and meeting customers' needs.

The Job

Have you got a passion to make the railway operate more efficiently and in the interests of its customers? We are looking for someone to lead our efficient train operations workstream to develop a clear vision and strategy for the rail industry, in particular covering train crew, rolling stock and operations.

You will provide expert knowledge as required across GBRTT, for example, on the impact and management of business change, the introduction of new trains or cascades, overhaul of trains and introduction of operational change.

You'll also be a strategic thinker, able to understand the relevant options and to evaluate them, and to articulate the clear priorities for change.

You'll have experience of frontline management in a train operator or freight operator environment, whilst also being a confident communicator at all levels.

We are looking for someone who can lead collaboratively, bringing together experts from across the industry (including Department for Transport, Train Operation Companies, Freight Operating Companies, Network Rail and Rail Partners) to develop the best 'whole industry' approach.

Finally, you'll bring relevant commercial experience, for example, of new train procurement and introduction, enabling you to provide a clear understanding of the commercial impacts of decisions.

We'll be looking for you to provide our input to the future design of GBR.

What you'll bring

  • Excellent influencing and stakeholder management skills at all levels, with ability to engage confidently with senior industry leaders to represent GBRTT
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Excellent analytical skills, with ability to interpret data
  • Strong operational leadership skills including experience of operational validation of business change
  • Understanding of the current structure, roles and responsibilities of Britain's rail industry and how this is expected and should evolve in the coming years
  • Educated to degree level or can demonstrate equivalent experience
  • Proven leadership skills, with the vision and ability to establish crossfunctional relationships,
  • Proven exceptional interpersonal skills, possessing the ability to interact and maintain credibility with people at all levels across the business and industry stakeholders
  • Strong commercial focus and financially astute.
  • Experience of leading projects to determine strategic rolling stock procurement decisions
  • Experience of train operator roles, e.g. train crew manager
