Chelsea & Westminster Hospital

Chelsea & Westminster Hospital is a major, multi-site northwest London healthcare provider and teaching hospital and comprises the C&WH and WMUH, which merged in September 2015.

The Trust is a Centre of excellence for both clinical medicine and obstetric care with close links to Imperial College London and The Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH).

It serves a diverse multicultural local population of 1.1million high level services are provided in an environment of academic specialisation.

They comprise of paediatrics (including tertiary paediatric surgery) neonatal intensive care, maternity services, burns, bariatric services, plastic surgery and HIV (St Stephen's Centre).

The post holder will undertake a RCOG recognised subspecialty training programme in Maternal and Fetal Medicine on a full time basis.

The programme is over 2 year's whole time equivalent, if the trainee is research exempt at the time of registering for subspecialty training, and over three years, if the trainee has not achieved research exemption at the time of registration.

Training is undertaken as a series of modules and each module covers a particular aspect of the MFM curriculum ensuring that all training opportunities are covered.

This post would be suitable for any trainee who has successfully completed ST5 or equivalent or is post-CCT. Previous experience in Maternal-Fetal Medicine would be advantageous but is not essential. Trainees must have MRCOG or equivalent. The appointee will be expected to register with the Subspecialty training programme at the RCOG. The appointee will have a named educational supervisor. Annual leave and study leave is commensurate with other post foundation doctors.

The aim of this post is to equip the post-holder with the necessary clinical skills to become a recognised subspecialist in Maternal and Fetal Medicine.

We have over 6,000 members of staff that are PROUD to Care for nearly one million people.

Both hospitals provide full clinical services, including full maternity, emergency and children's, in addition to a range of community-based services across London, such as award-winning sexual health and HIV clinics.

Our Trust has been rated by the Care Quality Commission as 'Good' in all five of the main domains of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led, giving an us overall rating of 'Good'.

We've also been awarded an 'Outstanding' rating for 'use of resources' by an NHS Improvement inspection.

Our facilities are some of the best in the country. We have been investing around £10 million a year in our estate.

We are currently spending £25 million on expanding our adult and neonatal critical care facilities at Chelsea and Westminster and redevelopment of our children's unit at West Middlesex - in partnership with our charity, CW+ and generous donors.

The maternal medicine component of the MFM training will be completed at WMUH (mainly) and C&WH. On both sites, it comprises eight Maternal medicine consultants, who run Obstetric Medicine clinics in conjunction with physician colleagues.

These weekly clinics provide specialised care for all medical disorders, including neurology, renal, hypertension, haematology, diabetes/endocrine, congenital heart disease in pregnancy, respiratory (including cystic fibrosis), obesity, infectious diseases (HIV), perinatal mental health, anaesthetic and pre-pregnancy counselling.

At the WMUH site, the Obstetric Medicine clinic was established 20 years ago, and now seeing over 400 new patients annually.

It is a well-recognised and popular training Centre in Obstetric Medicine which has seen many trainees locally, nationally and internationally successfully complete their training in Maternal Medicine, most recently completing the RCOG ATSM.

The Clinic runs all day on a Thursday, in parallel with the Perinatal Mental Health Psychiatrist clinic. There are weekly case review meetings for the Obstetric Medicine team. There are monthly MDTs with Haematology, Cardiology and Neuroradiology.

At the C&W site, as well as the weekly maternal medicine clinics, there is a specialist weekly joint congenital heart disease clinic run in conjunction with the RBH and attracts an extensive number of tertiary referrals.

Pregnant women with cystic fibrosis have joint care between C&WH and RBH. Maternal medicine training will be led by Miss Joanna Girling (WMUH) and Miss Roshni Patel (C&WH).
