  • A bit about you...
  • Do you want to drive development of new commercial products and services from UKCEH research capabilities and outputs, addressing some of society's most pressing environmental challenges? Then we have a new leadership position for you.
  • Working with our lead scientists and establishing collaborations across the private sector, you and your team will develop and market commercial opportunities that maximise the impact of UKCEH research and innovation. You will focus on commercial innovation leadership and coordination, working directly with the UKCEH Enterprise Board, and overseeing the Research Contracts and Licensing & IPR teams. You will inspire engagement across the organisation, enabling codevelopment with new partners, delivering a step change in commerciallyderived impact.
  • Main Duties:
  • Lead the Research Contracts & Licensing Function, encompassing Function business planning, development and risk management, informing and supporting our research and innovation strategy.
  • Working in partnership with Director of Impact & Innovation, develop and implement the UKCEH Enterprise, a whollyowned trading subsidiary, strategic business plan.
  • Lead commercial innovation, from development to exploitation, across business themes including:
  • Information products, models and decision support tools
  • Research contracts
  • Science equipment sales & rentals and associated data and interpretation services
  • Cutting edge contaminant analytical services and methodology development
  • Researcher industrial consultancy
  • Lead on social enterprise, spinout and jointventure creation, and approve negotiated sales, licencing and research contract commercial terms.
  • Develop, deliver and report progress to the UKCEH Enterprise Board against an annual plan for commercial innovation, budget and management accounts.
  • Implement UKCEH Commercial Innovation Fund to strengthen our commercial innovation pipeline, leveraging private sector coinvestment and opportunity development, and inform our innovation grant proposals.
  • Integrate and coordinate commercial innovation activities across Research Contracts & Licensing, Communications & Engagement and Research Development & Impact Functions.
  • Overarching responsibility for the Research Contracts service, line managing the Research Contracts Manager, encompassing revenue generating contracts and associated subcontracts, consortia agreements, Memoranda of Understanding, Non-Disclosure Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements, studentships and other agreements as required, in addition to partner due diligence.
  • Overarching responsibility for the Licensing and IP service, line managing the Licensing & IP Manager, encompassing noncommercial and commercial dissemination and exploitation of UKCEH IP, and inlicensing 3rd party IP to facilitate worldclass research and innovation.
  • Support the development of policies, services, staff and researcher engagement within the context of the Research Contracts & Licensing Function and commercial innovation, through mentoring, training, provision of legal advice and strategic direction.
  • Contribute to leadership of UKCEH at a senior level and deliver other duties commensurate with seniority of position as requested by the Director of Impact & Innovation.
  • Experience & Skills:
  • Extensive experience of commercial opportunity development, including IP management, and exploitation within research-intensive and/or consulting environments, supported by a rigorous approach to project management.
  • Proven success of negotiation of technology exploitation agreements and postdeal management, optimising impact and return on investment.
  • Some experience of social enterprise, spinout and jointventure creation.
  • An understanding of the needs of UKCEH research users, with an advanced appreciation of relevant commercial opportunities.
  • Experience at a senior manager and/or Boardlevels.
  • A track record of successfully influencing organisational
