Job summary:


The Communities & Integration Directorate sits at the heart of the government's aim to level up opportunities for everyone and DLUHC goals to establish socially and economically stronger communities.

The Counter-Extremism leads on supporting communities, preventing radicalisation, and tackling social harms to bring people together.

Our work across Whitehall and other government agencies is concentrated on several key areas:

  • Countering extremism in communities
  • Building societal resilience in communities
  • Addressing religious intolerance, communal unrest, and hate crimes.
  • Addressing social harms and fostering social resilience.
  • Acquiring innovative insights on counterextremism strategies.


The work is divided into three separate parts, which reflects the directorate's expanding role and the ministers' increased interest in these policies given their close ties to the Levelling Up agenda.

Support for counter-extremism spaces in the community and challenges that the stakeholders and communities may find difficult.


Job description:

The position will be under the section of Societal Resilience & Counter Extremism.

As a member of a dedicated team of policy, programme management, and engagement specialists, you will collaborate on several highly visible, intricate, and delicate policies and delivery initiatives.


  • Supporting the development, testing and implementation of counterextremism workstreams
  • Take the initiative in Counter-Extremism workstreams to support cross government extremism initiatives and assist their SEO/G7 on making consistent choices on external involvement.
  • Support on policy commitments that fall to other government departments, ensuring that these are delivered and working with these departments to develop new and ambitious initiatives.
  • Develop policy responses at pace to new challenges and improving evidence base.
  • Line management of staff in a way that improves business performance and build capability.

Person specification:


Essential Criteria

  • Have policy skills someone who can assess complex information and key issues.
  • Have good briefing and communication skills (both oral and written).
  • Comfortable briefing ministers and officials in person.
  • Extensive stakeholder engagement skills and requires a person who can build and sustain relationships both across Whitehall and with groups outside of the government.
  • Must be able to prioritise work and ensure tight deadlines are met, due to this role being fast paced.
  • Possess strong strategic thinking abilities, the capacity to solve problems, the capacity to internal with both detail and larger picture, and ability to move between the two with ease.
  • The capacity to respond to stresses and pinch spots across a larger portfolio by working flexibly in a small team and lending help to others as needed.

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge of extremist ideologies
  • Knowledge of government initiatives to counter extremism
  • Understand evidence by researchers ad summarises this in a clear way
