Extensive training and experience will be gained with timetabled sessions in theatre, clinics and endoscopy as well as through formal protected teaching and lectures provided every week as part of our dedicated teaching Programme for junior doctors.


Although this job is primarily aimed at doctors aspiring towards a career in a surgical specialty it will also be of great benefit to those considering a career in Acute Care/A&E, ITU, Radiology, Sports Medicine among many other specialties as the generic skills and training acquired throughout the rotation will be of use in a great many aspects of professional practice.

Clinical responsibilities

  • To provide general surgical care for the Consultant's patients in consultation with the consultants and other medical staff and provide care for all patients when on call.
  • Attend new and follow up general surgery clinics.
  • Participate in weekly multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Participate in theatre lists for elective and emergency patients.
Core responsibilities

  • Communicate and work collaboratively with all members of the surgical team.
  • Communicate effectively and sensitively with patients and relatives about all aspects of their clinical care.
  • Always maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Maintain legible and accurate documentation in the clinical records.
Governance

  • Assist with quality assurance, audit programmes and managing resources and budgets, when necessary.
  • Engage with the incident reporting system, Datix
  • Assist in development or review of Clinical Guidelines in all areas.
Professional Development

  • Identify and maintain support networks and clinical supervision.
  • Be responsible for maintaining personal and professional development.
  • Reflect on own practice and identify any educational or development needs in relation to this role.
  • Ensure that any individual training and educational needs are met to ensure clinical competence and expertise.
  • Comply with Trust Health and Safety policies, including yearly attendance at Fire Safety Lectures and Infection Control training.
