Locum Consultant in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery

Job summary
The successful candidate will be fully involved in the hepatobiliary surgical services and will participate as a leading member of the multidisciplinary team for the assessment, management and follow up of patients with liver, biliary and pancreatic diseases. The appointed candidate will be expected to perform advanced liver, biliary and pancreatic surgery and have skills in including laparoscopic techniques. The appointee is expected to take part in multiorgan retrievals.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in a 1:6 on-call rota to provide cover for HPB surgery and also participate in the liver transplant retrieval rota. On call activity includes HPB lists, ward rounds and outreach HPB emergency service.

On the first Wednesday of each month there is a Liver Transplant audit; on the third Wednesday of each month there is a HPB surgical audit; on other Wednesdays there is a general surgical audit/journal club/complex surgical case meeting.
Secretarial Support
Secretarial support will be available together with office space.
The post is based at the Liver Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Managerial responsibility will be to the Clinical Lead for Liver Services who is responsible to the Divisional Director, Medical Director and Chief Executive.
Physical
*To engage in the manual handling of patients according to the requirements of the medical care being delivered.
*To engage in the physical manipulation of equipment required to support the delivery of Hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery care
Mental
*To deliver regular periods of concentration related to patient welfare, e.g. reading medical letters, diagnostic results and analysing symptom data to provide accurate diagnosis; providing surgical intervention which may be several hours long.
Emotional
*To be available on call to manage frequently changing situations this may involve emotional or distressing situations.

Candidates should be :-
Fully competent in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery with an established record of clinical development and expertise
Demonstrable clinical leadership in shared decision making programmes for liver disease including engagement with clinical staff across specialities
Candidates must demonstrate that they can work within a multidisciplinary team
A high degree of competence in all basic medical skills and thorough knowledge of HPB practice.
Evidence of manual dexterity to perform advanced HPB surgery.
Able to lead a multiorgan retrieval team.
A high degree of motivation and personal self-discipline.
Leadership skills appropriate to:
-Directing and teaching medical, nursing and other professions allied to medicine
-Participating in and leading a multidisciplinary team
Commitment to and understanding of the principles of audit. Practical experience in running clinical audit projects
An understanding of and commitment to research and evidence based practice in all aspects of medical care.
Research track record in in some field of research relevant to HPB surgery, hepatology, radiology, or oncology with an internationally competitive publication record and a higher degree in the field (PhD or MD)
Ability to manage applicants own time and work effectively, understanding of role and importance of management in the NHS.

GMC Registration
-Inclusion on Specialist Register for general surgery or, if in training, eligible for inclusion on the Register within 6 months
FRCS or equivalent
