    We are looking for enthusiastic Healthcare Support Workers to join our Older Persons Inpatient Mental Health Team which provides care to patients in a ward environment, based at St James Hospital in Portsmouth.

    The ward is a dynamic team and a wonderful environment to learn on the job and develop new skills.

    We are looking for individuals with good communication skills along with a flexible and responsive approach as well as a genuine interest in working within this rewarding area of mental health nursing.

    As you progress there are opportunities for further professional development, with apprenticeships for both nursing associate and nursing pathways. However, this is based on a further application process. The team are very supportive and will help and guide with any learning need.

    The team works collaboratively to offer a seamless journey for patients based upon their needs and risks to ensure that care and treatment is assessed and provided with an emphasis on keeping hospital stay to a minimum.

    Main duties of the job

    Some previous caring experience is desirable though not essential.

    You will be based on Brooker wards based at St James' Hospital in Portsmouth. Shifts are worked over a 24-hour period, and we have 3 shift patterns: early -- 07:00-15:00, Late- 13:30-21:30, Night- 21:00-07:30 over a 7 day period. Your rota will include a range of shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.

    Successful candidates need to have the ability undertake Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) training which is a series of techniques for the safe prevention and management of potential violence and aggression.

    About us

    We have been working with other local NHS Trusts to create a new organisation, bringing together all community, mental health and learning disability services from across Hampshire and Isle of Wight. Subject to approvals, the aim is for the new Trust to be formed by July 2024.

    Project Fusion is the name for the programme to create the new combined NHS Foundation Trust. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust will be bringing the services into a single organisation will result in more consistent care, more equitable access to services irrespective of postcode, and a more sustainable workforce and services. The new organisation will operate locally to ensure services can best meet the needs of different communities.

    The new Trust will be comprised of all the services currently provided by Solent NHS Trust and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, the community, mental health and learning disability services provided by Isle of Wight NHS Trust and child and adolescent mental health services delivered in parts of Hampshire by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

    Colleagues will transfer to the new organisation under Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) -- known as TUPE on 1st July 2024. TUPE is a legal process to ensure you transfer out of one organisation and into another, maintaining the terms and conditions of your employment.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • GCSE in Maths and English or equivalent.
  • Qualification at Level 2 or in Health and Social Care or other relevant subject.
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Fitness to undertake and pass Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) training as required for role.
  • Desirable

  • Experience in working in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience of working in an environment where clients demonstrating challenging behaviour
  • Additional Criteria

  • An awareness or experience of using patient systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of confidentiality, and especially how that would apply in a Health setting.
