We aim to have a true 7 day service and, to realise that aim, we areincreasing our consultant physician workforce by 50% over the next 2 years.There will also be a marked increase in junior medical and other clinical staffto support this development.

    We are an enthusiastic and motivated unit providing ampleopportunities to develop and reshape the delivery of Cardiology services inCounty Durham and Darlington. We are looking for new colleagues who will beable to work with us to achieve this goal.

    We see this as a great opportunity for those whohave traditionally worked within the hospital and those moving into their firstconsultant post to make a difference to the Cardiology service inCounty Durham and Darlington.

    Main duties of the job

    The basic contract is for 10 programmed activites (PAs) withelective outpatient work and inpatient care in Cardiology. These duties will beshared with the other consultants based in UHND and DMH.

    The successful candidates willprovide skills in Cardiology but will be encouraged to develop additionalspecial expertise of their choosing to complement the special interests of theother consultants within the Trust.

    We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

    Job description

    Job responsibilities

    The post holders will be expected to undertake clinical workin conjunction with their clinical colleagues and other professional staff inorder to maintain and develop the Cardiology Service.

    The following are subject to change as the Trust seeks newways of working.

    The post holders will be based at theUniversity Hospital North Durham or Darlington Memorial Hospital, withcommitment to in-patient out-patient services in associated hospitals withinthe Trust.

    The post-holderswill undertake clinicalwork in conjunctionwith theircolleagues and otherprofessional staff in order to maintain and develop cardiology services anddevelop specialist skills in accordance with the needs of the department. Theywill be responsible in conjunction with colleagues for planning futuredevelopments of these services.

    The postholders will work with colleagues to develop services in the community whereappropriate.

    The postholders will share responsibility with the other Cardiologists in the trust tomaintain and develop specialist services.

    The postholders will have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and will provide a comprehensive clinical service to consultantcolleagues in other clinical disciplines in the hospital and to generalpractitioners in County Durham.

    Formanagement purposes and use of resources they will be accountable to theClinical Director and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resourcesallocated.

    The postholders will be responsible for the professional and educational supervision ofjunior staff.

    The postholders will participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff andundergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staffin hospital and community.

    Researchactivities, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinicalduties, will be encouraged and limited research funding may be availablefollowing successful applications to the local research and developmentcommittee.

    ContinuingProfessional Development (CPD) - the post holders is responsible for ensuringthat he/she meets the national requirements for CPD, both internal andexternal. Andwill be expected toattend regularly, and contribute to, the educational programmed activity heldby the Directorate.

    It isexpected that the appointee will actively and regularly participate in allclinical audit.

    The postholders will be expected to participate in clinical governance arrangements inline with national andlocal guidelines andin respect ofundergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the Trust inaccordance with current best practice.

    The postholders will be expected to deputise in the absence of colleagues in cases ofannual leave, study leave and sickness as far as is practicable.

    The post holders will uphold the visionsof the Trust and work with the team to help deliver 7 day services for Cardiologyservices which we are working towards.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • To be on, or within 6 months of being on, the GMC Specialist Register in Cardiology via a CCT in Cardiology or equivalent CESR, at the time of interview
  • Desirable

  • Research degree, Masters degree or Teaching Qualification
  • Certificate of Medical Education or other formal training programme
  • MD/PhD
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Competency in management and assessment of all areas of general cardiology at level expected on completion of specialist training in cardiology or non-UK equivalent
  • Experience of supervising, training and teaching trainees
  • Able to provide evidence of career planning through appraisal process
  • Evidence of being up to date with professional development
  • Desirable

  • Training in sub-specialty complementary to that of the existing Consultants
  • Statutory Registration

    Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
  • To be on, or within 6 months of being on, the GMC Specialist Register in Cardiology via a CCT in Cardiology or equivalent CESR, at the time of interview
