Skilled Cemetery Operative L3:

Job description

Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Permanent

Play a key role in ensuring graves are suitably prepped and ready for burials.


Join our small team to undertake grave digging, horticultural work, and other duties in accordance with Codes of Practice and current legislation.

We provide services in a sensitive manner, meeting all the requirements for different in faiths and cultures, and ensure all safe working practises are maintained and adhered to.

Based at Gilroes Cemetery, you'll be expected to work outdoors in all weather types. This is a full time, permanent post working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday.

However, you must be willing to work on a rota system to cover out of hour burials, which does include working some evenings, weekends and bank holidays.


What you'll be doing
Prepare graves for burial, backfilling and subsequent aftercare either mechanically or manually using shoring, shuttering and plant equipment.

Locating graves using cemetery plans and maps, you'll prepare and dress graves for funerals as well as level and turf graves and the surrounding areas.

You'll be responsible for operating and cleansing powered and manual hand tools specialised plant and other equipment. Liaising with Funeral Directors and members of the clergy you'll discuss issues in preparation for future burials.

On occasions you may be required to carry out exhumations, assist in the development of soft and hard landscaping as well as other activities in aspect of horticulture work.


What you'll need


An experience of outdoor work using construction or agricultural machinery with knowledge of basic maintenance, motor vehicles or other mechanical equipment.

With empathy and compassion, you'll be able to deal sensitively with members of the public and others in times of personal stress and grief.

Using basic admin skills, you'll ensure records of interments are accurate and up to date as well as complete all paperwork relevant to the cemetery and grounds maintenance service.
