Field Assistant

We are seeking a seasonal field technician (6 weeks duration, Aug 15-Sept 30th 2023) to support the project "Assessing the risk of mosquito vector-borne diseases in Scotland and their response to environmental change" working with Prof Heather Ferguson, Dr Davide Dominoni and Dr Francesco Baldini in SBOHVM.

This post will primarily involve supporting field work on insect vector and avian populations at field sites situated in Glasgow or southwestern with Scotland.

Responsibilities:


  • Carry out general field work duties, including the set up and running on insect traps near bird monitoring sites, catching and marking of birds, nestboxes' check and maintenance, and observation of bird behaviour.
  • Set up and carry out straightforward entomological and ornithological sampling studies and assist senior staff in the set up and carrying out more complex experiments.
  • Enter data collected into excel spreadsheets/databases. Ensure accurate maintenance of records is ongoing.
  • Ensure the upkeep and maintenance of field equipment.
  • Provide instruction and advice junior colleagues and students on the use of equipment and on the various procedures involved in bird and insect sampling
  • Identify and resolve straightforward problems that may arise in the field, referring more complex issues to senior colleagues.
  • Work safely and in compliance with the appropriate risk assessment documents.
  • Assess own workload for the day or days ahead, planning accordingly to ensure all necessary duties are completed.
  • Any other duties as directed by senior staff, commensurate with the grade of the role.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:


A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 4 in English and Mathematics (National 4) or equivalent, and some experience of working in a similar role.

A2 Working knowledge of relevant systems, equipment, processes and procedures.

A3 Understanding of relevant health and safety policies and procedures relative to the role, and the quality outputs and standards required.


Desirable:

B2 A valid UK Driver's licence
B3 Songbird-specific C licence with mist-netting endorsement from BTO.
B4 Working knowledge of equipment, protocols and procedures in relation to field work with birds.


Skills

Essential:

C2 Competent written and oral communication skills.
C3 Basic IT skills including Word, Excel, Outlook and basic informatics and statistical packages.
C4 Excellent accuracy and numeracy skills.
C5 Ability to follow written protocols.
C6 Good time management and ability to prioritise.
C7 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
C8 Ability to organise own schedule of work in consultation with others.
C9 Problem solving skills.


Desirable:

D1 Competent in the procedures involved in catching and ringing of birds


Experience

Essential:

E1 Evidence of engagement in field work activities
E2 Experience of undertaking a range of basic field work activities without constant guidance.


Desirable:

F1 Previous working experience in academic research projects involving bird or insect field work


Other

The postholder will be based in the School of BOHVM within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, but may be required to change location and work from the field station SCENE as required after appropriate consultation.

The nature of the field work requires flexible working hours, and the post holder should be available to work in the early morning if requested.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 3, £21,400 - £22,197 per annum.
This post is full time, and has funding for up to 6 weeks
