An exciting opportunity has arisen for 2 x SEND navigators to join the SILC Cluster team on a temporary 12-month contract, in the first instance.

C3 grade 37 hours per week; term time only plus 5 days.


The role of the SEND navigator is to offer support and signposting to families where a child / young person has recently received a Neuro diverse diagnosis and does not have an Education Health Care Plan.

The post will require a level of independence and knowledge of the SEND pathways and services within Leeds.

To support and enable families to access the right support at the right time working city wide with children, young people, families and professionals.

It would be of benefit to be a car user.


We are looking for a motivated individual with experience of working with children and families who can demonstrate a commitment to improving outcomes for children and families.

The post will involve some work in the home & in other venues such as schools. The post will require some lone working and unsociable hours.

The purpose of the role:


To support families when their child has received a neurodiverse diagnosis but prior to receiving an Education, Health, Care Plan.


To take a whole family approach to supporting parents/ carers and siblings where a child has received a neurodiverse diagnosis.

To signpost families and provide support around pathways and support.

To upskill and empower families creating resilience and autonomy.


To support professionals to understand pathways and support, taking a workforce development approach with particular support being provided to SENCO's in mainstream primary schools.

To promote the use of early help plan's and support the professional network in providing services to families.

To ensure schools are supported to understand pathways of assessment within education to afford the appropriate education plans. To provide the necessary support and challenge to schools. To advocate and support the graduated approach.

To identify areas of good practice and share learning.

To support children and families to access universal and targeted support.

To support mainstream clusters and Early help hubs in working with families where there is a child with a neurodiverse diagnosis

The post holder will form part of the SILC Cluster Team.

This Team works in an integrated way with schools and other agencies in order to meet the needs of children, young people and their families who attend a Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre (SILC) provision and The Light House (free school).

The role will work beyond the SILC cluster's current remit and support children and young people without an EHCP The post holder will bring to the team experience and expertise in the engagement of families and professionals where there is a neurodiverse diagnosis, prior to a formal EHCP.

Plan and deliver practical support, advice and guidance to families with children with complex needs and disabilities:

  • enable children and young people to have every chance of doing well in all levels of learning and have the skills for life;
- ensure that children and young people live in a safe and supportive family environment;
- ensure that children and young people have access to meaningful activities and community inclusion;
- reduce the risk of children and young people being referred to Children's Social Work Service;
- empower families to recognise their strengths within the roles and responsibilities in the emotional, social, physical and educational development of their children;
- support parents/ carers to access self-development, educational and work-related opportunities.

Responsible to:

SILC Cluster Targeted Service Leader


Main Responsibilities:

Consultation with families who require support due to having children with complex needs including a range multi-faceted issue such as:

  • Children/ adults with behavioural concerns
  • Supporting attendance at school
  • Children and adults requiring Social, Emotional and Mental Health Support (SEMH)
  • Children and families requiring respite support accessed through the Early Help Process
  • Children who are at risk of being Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) on leaving a SILC provision
  • Supporting preparations for adulthood transitions.
  • Work in an integrated way across multiagency and multidisciplinary boundaries, making a significant contribution to the support being offered to family's city wide.


Engage with families in a positive, respectful and responsive manner to enable them to gain the most from the support being offered.
