    Job summary

This post is suitable for doctors who have completed core surgical training or equivalent (at least 2 years' relevant experience post-Foundation training) and who may wish to apply for higher training in a relevant surgical specialty. It will also be suitable for doctors who wish to pursue a non-training grade career at registrar level.

This post (along with 4 others already recruited) has become available to provide resident overnight cover to intermediate-acuity surgical, orthopaedic and gynaecology patients in a cold elective site in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. The postholders will lead the surgical Hospital at Night team with junior doctor and ANP support. There is resident anaesthetic cover through the Post-Operative Care Unit. Senior specialty-specific support is provided by the relevant on-call teams at the acute site (Grange University Hospital) with an efficient and timely step-up transport service available 24/7, staffed by in house established transfer practitioners. There is no on-site CEPOD facility and post-holders will not be expected to undertake any out of hours surgery.

    Main duties of the job

Applicants will have extensive exposure to research opportunities both within the Health board and at Cardiff University and are expected to undertake GCP and research methodology training. They will independently run the "Early Arthritis Research Clinic" which occurs every other Tuesday in Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, Hospital. Responsibilities include recruiting and consenting research participants, data collection and analysis and performing interventional procedures in clinic such as ultrasound guided injections and joint aspirations. Applicants will be encouraged to submit research papers to national and international meetings in addition to preparing manuscripts for publication.

The post holder will participate in an approximately 1:5 resident on call rota nights only (including weekends) with prospective cover, with ample rest periods during shifts due to the "cold" elective nature of the patient population. A 50% banding supplement will apply, subject to confirmation.

The post will not have recognised educational approval, but will have the same supervision, study leave and annual leave as that of a recognised training post.
