Job summary:


This role is ideal for a practical person wishing to develop their forestry, countryside management and arboriculture skills and experience.


We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is keen to learn and has a good understanding of health and safety related to forestry work and a "can do" attitude, who will be a passionate ambassador for Forestry England.


Job description:


  • General forest maintenance work and various habitat management work across the 11 Thames Beat sites, including Jeskyns Community Woodland. This will include fencing repairs, woodland creation, silviculture, woodland and grassland habitat management, maintenance and monitoring
  • Working effectively as part of a team, and when requested responding quickly to unexpected work and issues raised by supervisors
  • Forest establishment and maintenance work, including, tree planting, shelter maintenance, weeding, loss assessment, tree guard removal, beat up surveys, and watering
  • Operate equipment such as chainsaws, pole saws, hedge cutters, petrol mowers, brushcutters and strimmers to manage forest structure, rides, paths and site infrastructure for the visiting public
  • Maintaining and improving public access, which includes regular, routine inspections of access areas, removing litter, reporting health and safety issues, resolving problems under own initiative and escalating issues to the Community Ranger and Beat Manager
  • Maintaining signage within the forest (e.g. pathway markers, information boards, car park signs) to ensure they are clean and in good order
  • Supporting tree tariffing and thinning operations
  • Supporting tree felling, processing and extraction
  • Providing support to deliver volunteer and corporate volunteer work parties when needed, which may include some evening and weekend work
  • Representing Forestry England, supporting educational visits and leading guided walks (which may include working weekends and bank holidays), where required
  • It is expected that the post holder may work weekends and evenings should operational needs require this

Person specification:


Essential

  • Experience of outdoor practical work within a countryside management, arboriculture or forestry or a related industry
  • A good understanding of health and safety issues relating to forestry and public access to estates
  • Demonstrable enthusiasm for practical work in the countryside and forestry sector
  • A good understanding of forestry, nature conservation and countryside issues in general, how these relate to the objectives of Forestry England
  • A familiarity with a variety of forestry hand tools / power tools and ability to demonstrate competence in their use
  • A clean UK driving licence.

Desirable

  • Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Arboriculture
  • Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Forestry and Arboriculture
  • T Level in Agriculture, Land Management and Production
  • Certificates of competency and experience in the operation and maintenance of a brushcutter/strimmer
  • Certificates of competency and experience in basic chainsaw use, maintenance and cross cutting, NPTC 201,202 & 203 (CS30, CS31)
