Job summary:

This is a Fixed-term Appointment as a Welfare Officer in the MOD- Army. Your responsibilities will be as described in this job advert.

This post will therefore begin on your appointment and end 23 months after that date You should be aware that when your Fixed-term Appointment at MOD comes to an end, arrangements will be made in line with the FTA policy.


If you are a permanent MoD civil servant and are found successful for an advertised Fixed-term Appointment (FTA) you should move into the post under a Temporary Transfer (for up to a maximum of 23 MONTHS).

At the end of the posting you will return to your previous MoD Business area.

If this posting is at a higher grade, your promotion will be temporary, and you will return to your substantive grade at the end of the Temporary Transfer.

If a Temporary Transfer cannot be agreed between all parties then a transfer on an FTA contract is possible, read the FTA and Change of Work Location in the UK policy for further information.


If you are transferring to MoD from another government department (OGD) you should join the MoD on an inward loan.

At the end of the loan you will return to your home (OGD) department. If a loan cannot be agreed between all parties then a transfer on an FTA contract is possible, read the FTA policy for further information

Job description:


  • The British Army prides itself in its ability to look after its people and as the Fulwood Barracks Welfare officer you would find yourself at the forefront of this task. There is no requirement to hold any formal welfare qualifications or indeed have any direct military service but what you will need are great communication skills, a strong desire to help other people and an ambition to be in a firstclass team. You will have the opportunity to gain the vital training once you have been appointed but you must be able to demonstrate an ability to both handle sometimes difficult and emotional situations with skill and tact as well as the determination to follow well developed processes and to record your work accurately. If successful you will be rewarded with a job that provides variety, challenge, a sense of purpose and the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of Service personnel.

Person specification:

The welfare officer is responsible for first line welfare support to all units located in Fulwood Barracks.

They will provide, within the Army's Code of Confidentiality, equal opportunity and confidential support to all military personnel and their dependants, discussing personal problems, domestic issues and actively supporting them with all welfare matters.


The Welfare Officer will:

  • Assist Commander North West and other Commanders, within Fulwood Barracks, on welfare matters relating to soldiers under their command.
  • Provide the focal point for Fulwood Barracks personnel for welfare, wellbeing, and community support. Providing support to families whilst Service personnel who are detached or operationally deployed. Provide assistance and support to the organisers of community support activities, particularly during operational tours and maintain close links with the Army Welfare Service's Community Support Worker.
  • Maintain close links with the Army Welfare Service and where appropriate work with Army Welfare Workers.
Establish and maintain relations with all relevant military and other charities in support of service personnel and their families, including:
Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's' Families Association, The Royal British Legion, Army Benevolent Fund, The Soldiers Charity.

Maintain links with local Head Teachers and governors of schools and colleges as well as local medical centres and the Department of Work and Pensions.


  • Attend all appropriate housing meetings and should engage closely with the Military Housing Officer in order to support the housing needs of Soldiers.
  • Attend all appropriate welfare meetings including case reviews for soldiers recorded as long term sick or at risk of selfharm.
Act as the Safeguarding lead for Headquarters North West.
