About the role


Reporting directly to the Head of Energy and Carbon Reduction, you will play a significant role in delivering the University's energy, carbon and water reduction aspirations and the University's most ambitious Sustainability Sub Strategy to date, achievingnet zero scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 2035.


Working closely with the Head of Carbon and Energy Reduction, you will develop and implement the University's various energy and carbon reduction policies and strategies and create and deliver a Carbon Management Plan that will achieve the University's netzero carbon emission targets.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious Energy professional to join our team.

Working with colleagues from across the University, your work will span our three campuses and you will develop an extensive understanding of the challenges and opportunitiesof the University's built, electrical, mechanical environments and undertake analysis of metering and BMS data.


We need:


The successful applicant will be highly motivated and have a determination to succeed, with the ability to build successful relationships and networks.

You will have a proven track record delivering projects over £100k in value, experience managing revenueand capital budgets and knowledge of energy markets and energy purchasing.

You will have considerable knowledge of M&E building systems, HVAC systems, BMS, electrical distribution, lighting, controls, metering and the built environment and knowledge and experienceworking under CDM regulations.


You will work on

  • Creating external funding bids for energy and carbon reduction projects.
  • Providing feasibility studies of costed initiatives and projects to reduce energy/carbon usage.
  • Creating internal energy, carbon and water project mandates and business cases.
  • Managing energy, carbon and water projects valued up to and beyond c.£1m.

Key responsibilities:

These duties are a guide to the work that the post holder will initially be required to undertake. They may be changed from time to time to meet changing circumstances.

  • Manage the reduction in energy, carbon and water usage across the three campuses in line with the University's Sustainability Sub Strategy.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Carbon Management Plan (CMP) and future Sustainability Sub-Strategies.
  • Deliver the energy, carbon and water elements of the Sustainability Sub Strategy action plan.
  • Develop and implement energy and carbon reduction policies.
  • Work towards securing external capital in excess of c.£1m for energy and carbon reduction projects.
  • Manage carbon emission reduction to achieve net zero by 2035 and agreed reductions in costs and energy consumption.
  • Oversee external funding accounts (i.e., Salix RDF funds), project repayments and general account matters.
  • Lead the assessment, investigation and development of new initiatives, ideas and energy efficiency projects to enhance University energy initiatives.
  • Develop an extensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities of the University's built, electrical, and mechanical environment.
  • Lead work with the Central Procurement Unit to minimise costs for the supply of gas, electricity and water to the University's Estate.
  • Manage the utilities budget and develop data related to business areas, departments and sections.
  • Provide expert advice, information, interpretation and support on technical/ professional challenges related to the Energy Performance of Buildings (England and Wales) Regulations 201
  • Work directly with colleagues, internal and external, other providers and external agencies to gather and exchange information and coordinate actions.
  • Manage the submetering of gas, electricity and water infrastructure to gain a greater insight into usage.
  • Minimise electricity, gas and water usage by detailed analysis of metering and BMS data.
  • Provide feasibility studies of costed initiatives and projects to reduce energy/carbon usage.
  • Work closely with colleagues leading on Sustainability Engagement to successfully drive behavioural change regarding energy and water usage.
  • Create energy, carbon and utility reports suitable for a variety of stakeholders to Director level.
  • Manage, lead and develop the Energy Officer and ensure staff are adequately qualified and trained.
