Politics and International Relations, School of Social and Political Science, College of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences

Full Time for 35 hours per week

Fixed Term for 30 months from January 2024 until 30 June 2026

The Opportunity:


You will examine the expansion and diffusion of immigration detention systems around the world, undertaking original research, leading on one of two country case studies (Australia or the US) with extended fieldwork.

You will also collaborate with the Principal Investigator on project outputs and dissemination.

These posts will require travel for fieldwork in either the USA or Australia for two periods of approximately six weeks each, as well as some moderate travel for conferences and outreach.


Your skills and attributes for success:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant social science (for example, Politics, Sociology, Anthropology, Geography).
  • Demonstrable postdoctoral or equivalent work experience, particularly critical engagement with migration and border studies.
  • Relevant postdoctoral experience (or equivalent work experience) of conducting ethnographic and/or qualitative research, including fieldwork.
  • Ability to author high quality academic publications to deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, supported by good IT skills and ability to adapt to digital research methods as required
