Are you passionate about delivering and managing key environmental outcomes and outputs? Would you like to take ownership and have a direct impact on how we manage environmental constraints and compliance of schemes / projects and influence the management of the soft estate and key environmental sites around the major roads network?


National Highways have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Consultant to join our team in Birmingham, with a flexible approach to working and regular visits to our sites around the West Midlands region.


_You will be required to drive as part of your role and you will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position _

Your new role
This is an exciting time to join us as we launch our new Environmental Sustainability Strategy.

You will play a key role in bringing this strategy to life by co-ordinating activities and resources to identify and evaluate needs, which you will then develop into environmental improvement schemes.


Your main focus will be developing and co-ordinating a programme of asset-led inspections and surveys across our key environmental sites and supporting a team of environmental specialists.

You will also engage with internal and external stakeholders to provide trusted specialist advice, supporting a range of schemes / projects.

What you'll be leading on

  • Providing environmental advice and expertise to a range of stakeholders
  • Managing and carrying out a programme of environmental surveys to monitor condition of sites and identify early programme needs
  • Collaborating with the engineering teams to ensure programme plans reflect asset needs and priorities, environmental legislation, business priorities and strategies
  • Identifying and commissioning environmental studies and survey works
  • Contributing to and advising on the development of early solutions for improvements and/or renewals, considering new techniques, materials, feasibility, and costs

To be successful

  • Proven project / programme delivery skills
  • Membership of professional body, CIEEM or IEMA or similar
  • Good environmental survey skills with experience delivering a programme of survey
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
