Overview:
The role and purpose of His Majesty's Fire Service Inspectorate in Scotland (HMFSI) is defined by the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 which was substantially amended by the Police and Fire Reform (Scotland) Act 2012 on 1 April 2013.
The Fire Service Inspectorate in Scotland exists to provide independent, risk based and proportionate professional inspection of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
The Inspectorate also provides independent, professional advice to Scottish Ministers and the Chief Inspector has an arbitration function in relation to non-domestic fire safety.
This fixed term appointment will run for a period of three years with the possibility of renewal.
Please note that this is not a secondment opportunity.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare for and carry out inspections/Inquiries alone or as part of an Inspection Team in accordance with legislation and Inspectorate guidelines.
- Prepare strategic reports, develop procedures, briefing notes and presentations in regard to the work of the various inspections, Inquiries, projects and tasks assigned.
- Provide professional advice to Scottish Ministers.
- Represent the Fire Service Inspectorate on relevant groups in Scotland and at National level as required, on occasion, deputising for the Chief Inspector.
- Manage and develop such references allocated to the postholder in accordance with the Inspectorate's Inspection Programme and business plan and/or as directed by the Chief Inspector.

Essential Criteria
- Substantial, current or recent strategic management experience of operating within a fire and rescue service environment.
- An extensive knowledge of the strategic issues facing the Fire and Rescue Service in relation to operations, risk management, training, health and safety, contingency planning, reform and the recruitment and selection processes.
- Excellent inter-personal, oral and written communication skills which are used to inform strategic decisions and policy.
- The ability to work independently, to prioritise work and meet tight deadlines.

The post will be based at St Andrew's House, Regent Road, Edinburgh This post will include travel across Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom (travel and accommodation expenses for these business trips will be reimbursed).
