The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine is seeking an experienced and proactive Data Analysis Officer.

The role is based within Faculty Education Services which supports all aspects of programme and student administration for more than 100 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and over 6000 students.

The post holder will deliver timely high-quality accurate information and produce reports to support quality assurance requirements and to inform continuous improvement.

The Data Analysis Officer provides statistical analysis for a wide range of stakeholders.

The role holder is expected to have experience across a range of processing tools and modelling methodology and be able to work independently across multiple data repositories and record management systems.

Working closely with professional service and academic leads, the Data Analysis Officer coordinates a proactive schedule of routine and bespoke reporting across learning and teaching related data.

The Data Analysis Officer is responsible for producing datasets to support audit activity, external accreditation requirements and implementation of the Education and Training Tariff.

Key responsibilities

  • Supporting academic and administrative leads through timely and accurate statistical analysis of learning and teaching related data.
  • Responsible for production of reports that support quality and process review, specifically in relation to programme performance and student experience: target setting, assessment, engagement, and attainment.
  • Using data from university systems such as SITS and Power BI. An expert Excel user able to use a range of statistical methodologies (e.g. borderline regression, Cronbach, Angoff), databases and software (e.g. SQL, R, Stata, SPSS).
  • Selfmotivated, able to work autonomously to coordinate the processing of End of Placement Surveys and Foundation datasets such as the educational performance measure
  • Supporting the preparation of external statutory data returns to NHSE, HESA and other professional, statutory and regulatory bodies (e.g. General Medical Council, General Pharmacy Council)
  • Supporting the Quality Manager in the allocation of the Medical and nonMedical Education Undergraduate Tariff to ensure that education activity is recorded, auditable and appropriately funded.
  • Maintaining up to date working knowledge of programme design, regulations, statutory guidance and the databases facilitating processes and student record keeping including SITS, InPlace and KEATS, the virtual learning platform.
  • Regularly liaising with the wider University network including Strategy, Planning & Analytics ensuring all work is carried out in professional timely manner with appropriate confidentiality and sensitivity.
  • Represent FES at Faculty and College meetings, leading by example to ensure colleagues within FES participate and engage with events, including being scheduled for student hub cover, enrolment, examinations and graduation

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria


  • Bachelor or equivalent degree, preferably in mathematics or equivalent qualification/experience
  • Advanced Microsoft skills specifically Excel and Power BI with excellent statistical methods knowledge
  • Ability to extract, manipulate, analyse, interpret, and present complex data accurately and in a variety of formats
  • Demonstrable regular and advanced use of reporting tools and specialist statistical and data visualisation software (e.g. SQL, R, SPSS, Stata, Power BI)
  • Able to write reports for wide range of stakeholders and to develop a narrative to help wider audience understand the data and conclusions presented
  • Methodical, detail oriented and flexible in approach to work, maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Proactive and able to work independently and as a team to meet deadlines across competing priorities and provide solutions to problems
  • Ability to form professional networks and contribute positively to implementing change
  • Work to high professional standards with integrity, honesty and confidentiality
Desirable criteria


  • Qualification in statistics
  • Knowledge of HEE student databases and/or assessment systems
  • Experience of supporting or undertaking a quality review and assisting with implementing change
