We are looking to appoint a Locum(Non-Resident)Consultant Paediatrician.

The post holder will contribute to the delivery of acute paediatric/neonatal care at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

The post holder will provide non - resident Consultant cover and will be part of the 1:7 on call rota.

This will include 7 on - calls in a 7-week cycle inclusive of a weekend (Friday 5 pm till Monday 9 am) and 4 weekdays of on-call (5 pm to 9 am next day).

As part of the rolling rota, the post holder will cover 1 hot week in 7 weeks covering either the Paediatric Ward or the Neonatal unit.

The role can be flexible which can be discussed with the Clinical Director if needed. This post is for 1 year. This may be extended depending on the needs of the department at the time.

- resident Consultant cover alongside a resident consultant (present from 5 pm - 9:30 pm weekdays and 1:30 pm to 9:30 pm on weekends) and a middle-grade.

The Child Health Directorate sits within the Surgical Division of the Wrightington Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. The directorate covers all areas of Paediatric and Child Health services in both Acute and Community settings.

Close relationships at management level are in place between the Acute, Community and Mental Health providers to promote integrated child health services across both hospital and community sectors.

This is an opportunity to join the enthusiastic and friendly paediatric department in Wigan.

There are close links between the community and acute paediatric services with some colleagues doing hybrid roles across both services.

We are looking for forward looking individuals to join our team. This post is aiming to support consultant delivered integrated paediatric care in the hospital.

It is anticipated that the post holder will have or develop a specialist interest which would complement those of the current team.

The post holder will contribute to the delivery of acute paediatric/neonatal care at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

The post holder will provide resident Consultant cover in the evening and weekends (no night-time duties) mainly with the support of a middle-grade and alongside an on-call Non -Resident Consultant colleague.

This is envisaged to further enhance the quality of care on offer.

Paediatric surgical facilities are on the RAEI site as is the Accident and Emergency Department for the Wigan and Leigh district.

This has been redeveloped and includes a self-contained Paediatric Emergency care centre. All acute children's admissions are seen here. There is an assessment area with 8 cubicles.

Rainbow Ward is a purpose built 32 bedded integrated medical and surgical ward.


Paediatric Community Audiology Services are based in a designated purpose built Children's Hearing Centre with close links with Education services for children with hearing impairment.

It is headed by a consultant in Paediatric Audiology.


Community Child Health Services are provided from a number of health centres, community clinics and mainstream and special schools along with the hospital outpatient facilities at Thomas Linacre and Leigh.


The Consultant will be expected to play an active role in:

  • The continuing development of all aspects of clinical work of the department and the quality of the service and methods of auditing these.
  • Planning matters which involve the Directorate.
  • The post holder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the medical contribution to management. In particular, they must support the Clinical Director across the whole range of managerial and administrative functions and share the responsibility for providing services within resources allocated to the Trust.
