Our A&E Reception team provides a 24hr administrative service within our Accident & Emergency Department, bringing their skills and professionalism to play a vital role in supporting our patients, medical and nursing staff.


You must have experience of dealing with members of the public and have excellent interpersonal skills, computer literacy & keyboard skills along with excellent organisational skills.

You also need the ability to prioritise a fast paced, varied workload, work in a structured and methodical manner with excellent attention to detail and be a committed team member.


You will be required to be flexible within the contracted hours, to be worked on our 24-hour varied shift which includes, Weekends, Evenings, Bank Holidays and Night shifts.

Full training will be provided.


The post holder will carry out an administration and reception service to the A&E Department to work flexibly and in a co-operative way that will enable effective deployment of team members within the team.


To have a responsible outlook in order to cope with the unpredictable nature of ward activity using prioritising skills and discretion to organise a daily workload to take account of deadlines and degrees of urgency.


The post holder will receive enquiries from members of the public and will need tact, diplomacy and awareness of the department in which they are working in order to manage these effectively.

These will be most dramatic at Watford General Hospital where up to 90% of buildings will be new.

Answer telephone enquiries, taking messages and ensuring these are communicated to the appropriate staff, accurately, politely and in a timely manner, using discretion and confidentiality at all times.

Provide administrative support to the nursing/medical staff, carrying out general tasks such as printing and photocopying, as well as provide cover for the main reception in PMoK (phone is put on divert to A&E)

Send outpatient and clinic referrals for our patients who need follow up appointments

Respond appropriately to the unpredictable nature of activity, prioritising workload as appropriate

Assisting with the training and mentoring of new members of staff in reception

Assist with departmental audits when requested

Direct and assist patients and others who come to the reception desk with queries in a courteous manner

Assist the clinical staff in ensuring the reception and administration areas are kept neat and tidy and that any hazards or faults are appropriately reported

Deal with GP requests asking for information about their patients (point of contact for GPs)

Out of Hours and at weekend are the point of contact for families and friends trying to find which ward their loved ones have been admitted to

Out of hours and at weekends are the point of contact for all car park queries. Will contact security with details etc for the visitor


Undertake designated duties as set out in the Major Incident Plan Booking in ambulances, check trolley clear, track movement of patients.

Checking NHS numbers for every patient booked into the department on the spine portal
