    We are pleased to be able to offer exciting and challenging opportunity to become part of our compassionate, dedicated and patient centred Senior Nursing team in the Neurosciences and Musculo-Skeletal Division (NMSK) at North Bristol NHS Trust.

    We are looking for an exceptional individual who is passionate about leading the team to deliver safe, effective clinical care to patients thus making a positive difference to the patient's experience. As Deputy Divisional Director of Nursing (Deputy Div. DoN), you will ensure that services within your areas of responsibility are delivered in line with governance, performance and financial objectives whilst ensuring the workforce are professionally led and managed to develop a sustainable, highly motivated, and empowered team. Your portfolio will include the line management of a number of clinical matrons/senior team members, leadership on a number of key divisional and corporate priorities and a pivotal part of the trust wide senior nursing team and agenda.

    We are seeking to appoint a Deputy Div. DoN who has a proven track record of successful transformational leadership and service improvement in a complex and rapidly changing healthcare setting. Candidates should be patient focused, with a commitment to safety and quality as the driver for change and improvement. You will be able to demonstrate an absolute passion for excellence in patient care, be an inspirational and compassionate leader with high level of clinical credibility.

    Main duties of the job

  • Deputising for the Divisional Director of Nursing, working in partnership with the Senior Nursing teams, Management Team and Clinical Leaders Specialty Leads to provide strong and effective leadership, ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of services to clinical users and patients.
  • Collaborating as a key member of the Divisional Leadership team, engaging in the development of our specialist services and building strong stakeholder relationships locally, regionally and nationally. A sound understanding of Clinical Governance, Quality and Safety, alongside a proven record of delivering a safe and sustainable workforce are essential, alongside the confidence and tenacity to deliver excellent outcomes
  • Direct line management of the Clinical Matrons and other senior members of the team, ensuring assignments are in place to set objectives, monitor performance and agree, review and delivery personal development needs.
  • Providing clinical leadership as a professional, visible role model for the division and trust.

    Job responsibilities

    Clinical Leadership

  • Provide clinical leadership, ensuring a professional, visible role model
  • Provide professional advice within and outside the Division.
  • Promote a culture that supports the active involvement of patient and carers and actively seeks their views on services provided and the planning, delivery and evaluation of their care.
  • Ensure that nursing practice is delivered in a manner consistent with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, the NMC Scope of Professional Practice and the Trusts approach to the expanded role of the nurse.
  • Support the Divisional Director of Nursing (DDoN) to provide professional leadership in the development of specialist nursing practice within the Division and across the Trust.
  • Support the Divisional Director of Nursing in providing clinical leadership for nursing and in all aspects of clinical governance within the Division.
  • Provide professional, managerial and clinical supervision.
  • Undertake specific education programmes within the Division, the Trust and local academic institutions, University West of England and nationally where appropriate.
  • Ensure a robust system is in place to ensure all nursing staff have access to mentorship and clinical supervision as a means of improving quality of care.
  • Required to maintain updated professional and clinical practice
  • Provide specialist advice and information to patients, carers, consultants and other hospitals.
  • Develop clinical leadership qualities in others and facilitate effective succession planning.
  • Provide Clinical leadership to service development projects within the Division.

  • Deputise for the DDoN
  • Line management responsibilities:
  • Ensuring that all nursing staff are appropriately trained and developed to meet the Trust objectives and statutory requirements.
  • Ensuring all registered nurses within the cohort have current registration.
  • Dealing with disciplinary and grievance issues as appropriate.
  • Ensuring that all nursing staff have the opportunity for performance appraisal and individual development planning.
  • Monitor retention rates of nursing staff supporting ward managers local recruitment programmes.
  • Support the DDoN in undertaking bi-annual skill mix reviews across the Division with individual ward managers and ensure these are incorporated in the Annual Planning process as part of service provision and development.
  • Implement objectives agreed at staff appraisals. Identifying where service and professional issues impact on training and development needs for the Division.
  • Lead development programmes and implement changes, promoting a learning culture in all clinical areas and supporting staff in their teaching role.
  • Develop, implement, monitor and maintain policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to and enforce nursing policies and Division policies.
  • Lead and contribute to commissioning of specialist equipment and services within the Division.
  • Communication with: Nursing, allied professional staff, medical, multi-disciplinary team, both internal and external to the Division. Acting as Division representative and as an ambassador to the Trust, locally as well as nationally.
  • Verbal, written, e-mail, formal and informal meetings, investigations. Taking minutes as required.
  • Maintaining and handling patients and staff personal information electronically.

  • Develop nursing practice and services in line with the Trusts strategic objectives, national guidance and local service development plans.
  • Implement NICE guidance, CQUINs and quality improvement in relation to NMSK services.
  • Make a corporate contribution to the nursing, clinical practice development and strategic decision making within the Division and as a member of the wider trust senior nursing team.
  • Participate in and lead performance review programmes throughout the clinical areas ensuring care is delivered by appropriately skilled and competent staff.
  • Support the DDoN in managing & compiling the education demand forecast for the Division.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of a workforce plan for the Division, maintain safe staffing and ensure a robust recruitment and retention plan
  • Contribute to research and development activity within and external to Division.

    Education/Training/Qualification

    Essential

  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Relevant Master's level qualification or equivalent experience

  • Project management qualification or equivalent experience

  • Considerable experience working operationally as a senior clinical nurse in an acute setting.
  • Experience of managing budgets effectively at a senior management level
  • Experience of successful management of change
  • Experience of workforce planning and skill mix review and development

  • Experience of business case development
  • Experience of working in relevant clinical specialty
  • Previous project management and / or service improvement experience eg UEC / patient first
