Job description


The Marine Evidence Work Delivery Group carries out a range of work from data management through to analysis and evidence dissemination.

This role will be working with spatial data (such as GIS files), tabular data and metadata records related to the mapping, monitoring, cataloguing and publishing of marine designated features, habitats and species.

The role includes aspects of data management, processing and analysis. Documenting methodologies and processes for internal or external communication is also required.


The Lead Adviser will:


  • Support the Senior Advisers in establishing and prioritising business and functional requirements for marine data and information; Support the Senior Adviser in ensuring Natural England's geographic information systems can meet these requirements.
  • Lead, manage and monitor delivery of specific marine data management projects.
  • Provide technical GI and data analysis expertise for relevant marine projects such as condition assessment, and those supporting elements of the DEFRA 25 year environment plan, or Environment Bill
  • Support the identification of new marine data to add to the online spatial data metadata catalogue, and compilation of new metadata to relevant standards.
  • Work with colleagues to ensure marine data and spatial information are managed appropriately, and made available and accessible to staff across Natural England, and external stakeholders, including through analysis and interpretation.
  • Ensure that the data are collected, collated and stored to adhere to the standards required by INSPIRE, MEDIN, EMODnet and marine legislative drivers.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry developments in marine data gathering, data management and GIS to identify opportunities to further develop Natural England's exploitation of geographic information;
  • Provide specialist GI input and support on oil spill response or other marine pollution incidents where GI data needs updating and disseminating to relevant local marine team staff in a short time frame
  • Deliver formal and informal technical GI training to users as required, and create or maintain guidance or technical documentation on aspects of marine data management and processes.


The team works flexibly to meet project requirements and therefore some aspects of the role may change as priorities evolve and develop over time.


Key skills / experience:


  • Working knowledge of marine legislative drivers, projects and policies, and how these are supported by data and evidence.
  • Some familiarity of the UK marine evidence community, and how data flows, providers, data archive centres and metadata flows function and are linked.
