The Communications Directorate is responsible for managing and developing the Bank's external and internal communications.

We manage the relationships with key stakeholder groups including the Media and Parliament, as well as providing a Public Enquires function.

We work with a wide range of colleagues to develop and deliver the Bank's programme of outreach and education, which includes building strategic partnerships with other organisations and running the Bank's Museum.

We also develop and maintain our external website and social media presence and produce the Bank's flagship publications, including the Inflation Report and Financial Stability Report.

In addition we lead on the development of the Bank's strategic plan, helping to ensure it achieves its desired outcomes, monitoring and reporting on delivery of the plan to the Executive Director Committee, Court and the wider Bank.

The Communications Directorate is also responsible for meeting the Bank's statutory obligations regarding the Freedom of Information Act, coordinating and responding to requests.


Department Overview
The Press Office is engaged with every major issue and event across the Bank. This job offers frequent access to senior staff and insight into the full range of the Bank's work.

You will have the opportunity to help shape the Bank's public communications, and take the lead on all aspects of communications on financial stability.

This is a senior, front-line role that will be vital in helping shape the Bank's reputation externally. The hours may be unpredictable but the job will be rewarding.


Job description
The work of the Senior Press Officer would include:

  • Setting a communications strategy in order to build an overarching narrative for financial stability and the work of the Financial Policy Committee (FPC).
  • Responsibility for the media engagement, plans and advice for the Deputy Governor for Financial Stability and external members of the FPC.
  • Arranging and managing media briefings, press conferences and interviews, including regional visits.
  • Working closely with Bank senior leadership, including the Governor, and staff across the Financial Stability, Financial Market Infrastructure and CBDC/FinTech teams on media issues.
  • Dealing with enquiries from journalists and managing relationships internally and externally.
  • Working closely with other teams across Communications to support the delivery of financial stability messages to all audiences, ensuring the Bank is communicating clearly and effectively.
  • Liaising with the Strategic Communications team to inform overall communication priorities.
  • Involvement in the preparation and launch of Bank publications, speeches and other public events.
  • Devising and delivering communications plans for the Bank's work on central bank digital currency (CBDC), FinTech and payments innovation.
  • Attending FPC meetings to provide communications advice.
  • Participating in Press Office's outofhours rota service, including handling media calls and media monitoring duties.

Role Requirements

  • Substantial, extensive experience of communications work and an ability and willingness to deal with journalists robustly and fairly.
  • Strong knowledge of the issues and threats the UK financial system faces and a good awareness and understanding of financial services
  • Proven track record in developing new ideas and initiatives; able to manage effective relationships with journalists and senior Bank personnel.
  • An ability to express complex material in simple, direct terms in order to be accessible to a wide range of audiences.
  • An ability to use a wide variety of channels of communication, particularly digital and social media.
  • Sound judgment with regard to the disclosure of information, and a strong sense of the issues and sensitivities facing the Bank.
  • A team oriented approach which means you're willing to get involved and support team members on a wide variety of issues as required, often at short notice.
  • Confident, team orientated and flexible.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills engaging, interactive and accessible.
