Description
Currently we offer Food and Nutrition at Key Stage 3 to our First Year (Year 7) students on a carousel with Design and Technology – one double lesson a fortnight for half the year. Second Year (Year 8) have a double lesson a fortnight. It is then part of an option process for our Third Year (Year 9) students who then have three lessons a fortnight (a single and a double lesson). At Key Stage 4, Fourth (Year 10) and Fifth (Year 11) students follow the AQA GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition syllabus.
At Key Stage 3, students study a variety of topics which echo the five key areas of the GCSE syllabus: food, nutrition and health; food science; food safety; food choice and food provenance. Each year will focus on the development of knowledge and practical skills, including the importance of food presentation. We achieve good GCSE results at Key Stage 4 with around 14 students in each year group. Students are offered a variety of ways to learn e.g. demonstrations, presentations, individual and team investigations/practical activities. There is an expectation that applicants will have good ICT skills and will wish to incorporate ICT into their teaching.
The department is expected to contribute to various co-curricular activities (eg food clubs, inter-house competitions, Open Mornings etc) as well as surgeries and revision classes to support GCSE students.
There are currently two teaching staff and two well-equipped food rooms which are assisted by two part-time food technicians. The ethos of the department is founded on teamwork between teachers and technicians, and the building of positive and supportive relationships with the students. Continuous professional development is crucial in this fast-moving subject. Members of the department are encouraged to keep updated on the examination system and attend conferences and courses. We feel that an enthusiasm for learning new skills helps us to engage our students and keep lessons fresh and relevant, preparing them well for their future.
