    Job summary

    We have an exciting opportunity to join our multi-disciplinary team within HMP Stoke Heath on a part-time, permanent basis.

    We are looking for a caring and compassionate Band 3 Health Care Support Worker to join our professional, friendly and supportive team.

    You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary Integrated Mental Health and Substance Misuse team consisting of Consultant Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Registered Mental Health Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Recovery Practitioners and Assistant Psychologists.

    Assessments and interventions are offered in line with a stepped care model with a single point of access for prisoners experiencing mental health difficulties.

    Working in a prison can be challenging, but can bring you the most rewarding times of your career. We are looking for someone who is passionate with the ability to work with and enhance our existing team.

    Our service encounters a vast array of clinical presentations, from primary mental health needs of anxiety, low mood and adjustment to the custodial setting to severe and acute mental illness requiring intense, multi-agency support. Working within a prison requires resilience and compassion as well as an insight into issues pertinent to people within the custodial setting. The environment enables work with a variety of professionals both in the establishment and in the community to support recovery and reduce reoffending.

    Main duties of the job

    The main duties of this role include:

  • Strive to improve the lives of people with mental health and substance misuse difficulties by minimising the impact of their condition through the delivery of excellent services to promote recovery and well- being.
  • Meet the needs of patients and their carers in a compassionate way.
  • Work as part of an Integrated Multi-Disciplinary Team, working collaboratively and in partnership with primary care and prison colleagues.
  • Assist in the delivery of patient care, as directed by registered practitioners, substance misuse recovery workers and the team manager, undertaking duties and activities with limited or indirect supervision in the prison setting.
  • Promote social inclusion and recovery through the provision of high quality patient care.
  • Show commitment to and participate in quality improvement activities.
  • Promote at all times a positive image of people with mental ill health and substance misuse problems.
  • Promote at all times a positive image of the Service and the wider Trust.

  • Maintains safety, privacy and dignity of all patients in the delivery of patient centred care, recognising and respecting differences including spiritual and cultural beliefs.
  • Responsible for recognising the signs of patient harm, abuse or neglect, including poor clinical practice, identifying issues regarding the safeguarding of children who may be at risk and reporting all such concerns in accordance with Trust Safeguarding procedures.
  • Undertake delegated activities within level of own competency, and with due regard to risk assessment, to assist with the implementation of intervention plans as part of the multidisciplinary team. Patients will have a range of mental health conditions and may demonstrate challenging behaviours.
  • Contribute to patient assessment and accurately document within the medical record.
  • Identifies changes in patients presentation and acts, reports and records appropriately.
  • Regularly accompanies and provides support to patients in a variety of prison settings, as delegated and dependent on current risk assessment.
  • Accurately records and reports physiological observations ( weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse), as required.
  • Assists in the provision of health education and advice on health promotion and harm minimisation to patients and their carers.
  • Demonstrates safe breakaway techniques in the management of violence and aggression as required.

    Qualifiications

    Essential

  • Health and Social Care Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Care Certificate
  • Key skills in Literacy and Numeracy Level 2
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Previous experience as a Band 2/3 HCA or equivalent in a care environment
  • Awareness of legal frameworks including Mental Health legislation (within agreed timescale).
  • Desirable

  • Previous experience of working with people with mental/social health needs or learning disabilities.
  • Previous experience of working in a prison or secure setting
  • Ability to co-facilitate Group work
