    St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in South London, is a teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre with our maternity unit providing care to over 5000 women yearly.

    Our midwifery led Birth Centre - Carmen Birth Centre, named after one of our passionate community midwives - delivers approx 600 babies a year. Our dedicated teams and specialist midwives for AN screening, Infant Feeding, NIPE, Bereavement, Governance, FGM, Maternal Medicine, Diabetes, FMU/DAU, Safeguarding and Perinatal Mental Health have a wealth of experience and are able support you to develop your knowledge in areas you feel passionate about. We currently have vacancies for midwives to join us as Band 6 Midwives in our Inpatient and Outpatient areas . Main duties of the job We take pride in promoting midwifery by delivering holistic woman-centred care to our diverse community. The enthusiastic and dynamic midwifery and obstetric teams work closely together with an embedded MDT culture to meet the specific and individual needs of women who come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We strive to give outstanding, safe and compassionate care throughout pregnancy and birth to all women, whether they chose to give birth at home, in our Birth Centre or on our Delivery Suite. We are working towards providing a continuity team model for all women so you will be joining us at an exciting time. Our outstanding maternity HDU cares for women who need more complex care and we offer training and support to all midwives interested in developing the skills to work here. We are very proud of our well established Fetal Monitoring team that deliver MDT training, twice weekly teaching and clinically support learning on shifts. You will gain a deeper understanding of fetal well-being, CTG and STAN monitoring that will expand your knowledge and help support a safe and healthy birth. You can develop your skills and practice across the entire maternity service and support women across the entire range of our services. All contracts are rotational and you will have the opportunity to gain experience in all areas of midwifery with rotations to inpatient and outpatient areas along with opportunities to join our continuity of care teams. About us Our Practice Education team are here to support you as you continue your midwifery journey with us and offer a comprehensive orientation package, CPD program and annual mandatory updates. Our CPF's support all midwives with supporting students and offer training in SSSA so that staff can reach practice supervisor and assessor status. Our PMA team have dedicated staff forumsto enable midwives to talk through the challenges they are facing in their midwifery career at St George's. They also arrange peer support. Job description Job responsibilities Please note that you must have completed, or be near to completion of, your preceptorship year to apply. All applications should be made on-line.     • Undertake the full role of the midwife
    • To act as an advocate for women and babies receiving care.
    • Undertake care of mothers and babies throughout pregnancy, delivery and during the postnatal period within the hospital.
    • Facilitate and continually assess, implement and evaluate all midwifery care, in line with current evidence, unit policies and guidelines, and the NMC Midwives Rules and Code of Practice.
    • In conjunction with the midwifery coordinator and midwifery management team develop the ward/department/community philosophy and models of care to ensure that all policies and procedures are implemented to deliver evidenced based woman centred midwifery care.
    • Have undertaken and successfully completed the Preceptee Booklet/ Portfolio (or near to completion).
    • Be skilled in undertaking IV drug administration, cannulation, perineal suturing .
    • Be skilled in undertaking, or willing to develop, skills required to safely and competently undertake a home birth
    • Provide support and advice following miscarriage, termination, stillbirth, neonatal abnormality and neonatal death.
    • Ensure the safe care and custody of drugs in accordance with the hospital policy and the Midwives Rules and Code of Practice.
    • Be confident and competent in dealing with obstetric emergencies in hospital and community setting as appropriate such as shoulder dystocia, post partum haemorrhage, neonatal resuscitation, maternal resuscitation and unexpected breech birth.
    • Ensure that accurate, clear, contemporaneous, legible records are kept with evidence of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care. Monitor standards and take corrective action as appropriate reporting to the midwifery coordinator/ lead midwife.
    • Ensure due regard is given to needs, customs, values and spiritual beliefs of women and their families. Assess the needs of women and their families and friends and deal with them sensitively.
    • Responsible for the protection and safe guarding of children, with an awareness of child protection procedures, and who to contact within the Trust for further help and guidance.
    • Have involvement in the care of women and their families following bereavement, giving appropriate and sensitive emotional support
    • Have an understanding of the guidelines relating to mental health issues and the referral process.

    • Core clinical skills competency (IV, Cannulation, suturing)
