    Join our team as the Retail manager and help the St Michael's Hospice Retail team reach the next level.

    About Us


    This is an exciting time to join a charity with ambitious retail expansion plans.

    Within 10 months we've opened 4 new shops and in May we plan to open our largest site to date, with 50,000 square feet of space.

    This will become our flagship store, as well as an online centre, donation station, distribution and upcycling centre, all under one roof.

    The aim is to have a minimum of 20 sites of all shapes and sizes, across the region to raise the profile of the hospice in the community and help fund the increasing demand for our hospice services.

    About the job

    We're looking for an enthusiastic and driven manager to support our shop teams in the North of the region.

    You will also be responsible for leading on specific projects identified by the Head of Retail to maximise sales.

    We are looking for someone who can champion training on gift aid and customer service and has a flair for visual merchandising, having significant experience and knowledge of the retail sector as we embark upon a new three-year strategy.

    We are seeking a tenacious and energetic person, with a passion for pre-loved goods and sustainability.

    The right person will seek out every opportunity to build strong relationships to ensure support and wellbeing of colleagues, as well as improving income for the benefit of our patient care.

    You will be assisted and encouraged by the Head of Retail to be succeed in this role and will join a friendly and supportive team of existing Area Managers.

    Good communication, IT literacy, reporting and analytical skills are essential for this position, alongside an approachable nature with a sense of humour.

    For this pivotal and crucial role for the hospice we are asking for a relevant retail management or leadership qualification, demonstrated past success in achieving targets, and a full driving licence for travel across Herefordshire.

    37.5 hours hours per week with occasional evening or weekend work required.

    Head of RetailResponsible for:
    Approximately 6-8 Store Managers, 10 bank staff and circa 200 volunteers

    Financial Responsibilities:
    Income target circa £625,000 per annum with an expenditure budget of circa £405,000

    Job Purpose:

    To be responsible for managing income and expenditure of 6-8 retail stores throughout the county and co-ordination and distribution of donated stock for our retail stores to ensure income is maximised in all areas.

    People management of staff and volunteers.

    Responsible Areas· Contribute to the retail strategy, working alongside the Head of Retail to deliver an innovative income growth· Ensure that all financial and non-financial targets and KPIs are reached across multiple sites including (but not limited to) for income and expenditure, Gift Aid and customer service· Lead on the management of innovative ways of securing quality pre-loved items, such as through pop-ups or working with companies for donate don't dump days or donating unsold stock.

    This includes managing staff and volunteers in relation to the sorting of goods.· Work with shop managers in the acceptance of donations to continually improve processes· Co-ordinate and deliver regular reviews on the Retail Gift Aid system to ensure that correct information is captured and maximised on donated goods or cash.

    Adhering to HMRC regulations· Manage compliance with financial controls for stock and cash· Communicate monthly with the Head of Retail to analyse monthly income streams and highlight any concerns· Deliver EPOS reports that maximise stock and space management· Collate and reconcile weekly shop income, investigating any discrepancies in a timely manner· Ensure that all retail and trading activities conform to current ethical and moral standardsPeople Management & Communication· Participate in effective recruitment, training and retention of paid retail staff and volunteers· Provide support to managers, staff, and volunteers through regular visits to ensure retail sites are being managed effectively and efficiently adhering to current retail guidelines· Ensure all retail staff and volunteers adhere to Hospice policies and procedures in line with expectations set down by St Michael's Hospice· Conduct regular appraisals, probationary reviews and 1:1s with all direct reports· Maintain performance in all stores, particularly regarding time keeping, trading hours, management, and customer service· Manage and authorise resources to ensure cover is provided for planned absence and contingency plans are in place.· Monitor and record sickness and absence procedures including return to work interviews through electronic Citrus HR system.· Conduct any disciplinary procedures required in accordance with HR practice· Co-ordinate with the Education department to deliver mandatory training.· Provide hands on coaching and training in merchandising, customer service and all relevant procedures.· Identify volunteer opportunities and liaise with the Volunteer Coordinator regarding volunteer agencies for recruitment and proactively look for new opportunities with organisations or communities.· Contribute to the quarterly Income Generation and Marketing Committee report· Contribute to regular Managers meetings virtually or face-to- face, within retail sites or Head office· Ensure that Hospice safeguarding procedures are followed, and any issues escalated to Head of Retail· Contribute to and update retail training manuals as required· Communicate and escalate to Head of Retail any issues that sit outside the level of responsibility of this role.

    Planning and Development· Contribute to the ongoing delivery of the retail and online strategy, aims and objectivesPlanning and Development· Contribute to the ongoing delivery of the retail and online strategy, objectives, and development of all sites.· Ensure any new retail projects and developments are implemented to plan· Strong visual merchandising skill to monitor and advise on display and shop layout to increase income potential· Identify new opportunities to grow the business and contribute to each business case to support the activity and further profit growth· Support the online sales initiative by ensuring stock is delivered in a timely fashion to the online sales hub· Implement and review processes for stock rotation and culling to maximise profits across the whole retail operation· Implement regular internal audits across all sites including financial, Health and Safety and Fire· Monitor and advise on retail site pricing structure in accordance with retail pricing policy· Ensure shops are well stocked through co-ordination of stock across all the hospice shops/sites· Support shop managers with improving IT and technical knowledge and skills· Maintain accurate stock control of any new goods· Occasional responsibility for opening up, covering shifts, and cashing up tills at the end of the day lead on specific projects as identified by the Head of RetailLegislative Compliance· Ensure compliance with all Hospice Health and Safety policies and procedures.· Ensure compliance with all relevant Trading Standards and Environmental Health· Manage compliance with financial controls for stock and cash.· Identify that all donor information is stored in the correct way following the latest GDPR guidance· Identify that Retail Gift Aid procedures follow HMRC regulations· Conduct regular risk assessments· Ensure managers comply and record all fire and health and safety checks.· Document and investigate incidents and accidents and report to RIDDOR if necessary· Ensure safe waste management procedures are adhered to.· Manage and co-ordinate any issues with recycling companies· Assist the Head of Retail with retail refurbishments.· Key holder/emergency contact for out of hours' security breaches.
