This post is an essential administrator support for our maternity bereavement team and rainbow team.


This small group of midwives are passionate about the care they provide to women and families who have undergone a pregnancy loss.


We are looking for a person who is compassionate, caring and has the ability to undertake the administration needs for this role.

This will involve dealing with bereaved families, mortuary and funeral directors. This will be a very rewarding role for the right individual. The rainbow team provide care for pregnant women who have undergone a pregnancy loss in their previous pregnancy


The post holder will act as a Bereavement Officer will provide comprehensive administrative support for the Maternity Bereavement and Rainbow teams.

The post holder will assist in providing a professional and co-ordinated bereavement service to the parents whose babies die within the RBFT and families requiring maternity care in a subsequent pregnancy following a baby that has died.

They will support families and team members with an empathetic, caring, professional and timely manner.

The Bereavement and Rainbow teams are a small team of midwives within our Maternity team. We currently provide care for over 5000 women a year during their pregnancies across Berkshire. Care is provided by midwives, obstetricians, anesthetists and neonatal team. The unit is made up of antenatal clinic, delivery suite, post natal and antenatal wards and a birth centre. This role will be based in the antenatal clinic area.


To communicate in clear, calm and compassionate manner as the post holder will deal with a range of highly charged emotions and an equally wide range of people and needs on a daily basis.

To maintain a professional attitude and demonstrate emotional composure in a potentially distressing and emotionally draining working environment.

To communicate and liaise with both internal e.g. Doctors, midwifery staff etc.

and a wide range of external agencies including the Coroner and his Officers, the Police, Registrar's of Births, Deaths and Marriages, other NHS Trusts, General Practitioners and their staff.


Manage complex multi faith, multi-cultural and diverse relationships in a highly emotionally charged environment with people who may have no knowledge of the UK Death Certification process.

To maintain confidentiality at all times.

Liaise with Coroners Officers and provide a source of information for all trust staff with regard to

Completion of documentation and processes relating to deceased and referrals to HM Coroner.

Inform relatives if there has been a referral to coroner and explain the subsequent process.

Provide information to parents, making them aware of their next steps and signposting them to further information


To assist the Specialist Midwives with the provision of the Rainbow and Bereavement Service, providing administrative support to the team and face to face and telephone contact with families.

Must be able to provide excellent support to families and help run an efficient and organised service.

To provide a varied range of administrative assistance and support for the team. Ensuring appointments are made for parents and they are provided with information in a timely manner. Supporting the midwifery team with diary management.
