The role
As a Lead Professional Head, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary.

As the Lead Professional head, you'll lead a team of Professional Heads of Engineering, for Civils, P-Way, OLE and M&EE disciplines by providing independent technical and professional expertise to the Head of Safety and Assurance.


Day-to-day, you'll provide technical support to the senior management team and delivery units ensuring compliance with Legislation, Network Rail Standards and Babcock Procedures, thus controlling catastrophic risk.


  • Pursue Engineering Excellence and lead and support initiatives to drive engineering improvement and manage the competency of the staff working for Projects.
  • Provide a formal link to Network Rail to allow Technical and Engineering issues to be discussed and disseminated.
  • Responsible for developing strategy to ensure engineering assurance and compliance with standards are being consistently achieved through audit, monitoring and various other techniques.
  • Direct the development and review of procedures and work instructions, carrying out technical instruction and briefings in the offices and depots.
  • Ensure the team independently monitor technical and procedural aspects of all works via a programme of audit and surveillance ensuring compliance to Network Rail Group and Line Standards.


This role is full time, 35 hours per week and requires regular travel across a range of internal and customer sites on a weekly / monthly basis alongside home working arrangements.


Essential experience of the Lead Professional Head

  • Knowledge and experience of all Railway Engineering and associated Standards.
  • Excellent knowledge of operational railway and associated safety matters.
  • Is strongly focused on developing a customer focused and responsive team that is able to provide effective support to the business and strategic development of the business as a whole.
