Overview of Organisation and Job Role
Heavy Sound is a non-profit organisation, registered as a community interest company, based in East Lothian. We have been providing services for over 7 years for marginalised young people and adults. Our mentoring services cover adult, youth and community support. The role will be split between these areas, as agreed with the Mentoring Services Manager.


Adult Services
Our mentoring services provide support for young people and adults. We offer mentoring in communities and in prisons, working with people on a person-centred basis.


The role will involve:

  • Delivering mentoring and supporting activities for adults involved in the criminal justice system in East Lothian
  • Delivering mentoring and recovery activities for adults in HMP Edinburgh
  • Delivering unpaid work activities in East Lothian
  • Delivering peer mentoring training

Youth Services

Through our youth services we provide a relational, place-based and trauma-informed approach to person centred learning and development for young people aged 11-16.


16+:

The role will also involve supporting our 16+ services as follows:

  • Continuity
  • moving on from person-centred learning and school, and support to navigate crisis, address barriers and identify further learning, training, and opportunities taking young people 16+ towards future destinations

Involvement with specific projects:

  • Targeted Music, Biking and Sport projects

Community
We deliver youth and outreach services, and the role will involve working in this capacity as follows:

  • Support service for local youth work
  • The CRIB working on our 40 foot fully converted single decker bus modified to provide community outreach initiatives involving music, arts, biking, access to services and advice, hairdressing, and events
  • Delivering peer mentoring training
courses


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


The successful applicant will support the Mentoring Services Manager to deliver and develop mentoring services for adults in prisons and communities.


  • To support people in prison during their sentences, to support them back into the community, linking people into relevant services, groups, activities
  • Onetoone support for residents returning to East Lothian to engage in the relevant services from housing, benefits, addictions, mental health, counselling, social activities, etc
  • Working within HMP Edinburgh to deliver psychosocial wellbeing groups to residents
  • Working within HMP Edinburgh to facilitate peer mentoring training
  • Supporting people involved in the Criminal Justice system in the community in partnership with Criminal Justice Social Work
  • Delivering support to people on Unpaid Work at the weekends. (Saturdays)
  • Working closely with the Mentoring Services Manager to develop opportunities for people that we support
  • Attend training and personal development opportunities
  • Support volunteers and oversee volunteer activities
  • Support wider team flexibility to help and cover other areas of the business when needed

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:


  • Understanding of trauma and working with people who have experienced complex trauma
  • Knowledge and experience of working with addictions, mental health, people involved in the criminal justice system
  • Mentoring experience preferred
  • Lived experience of mental health, addiction &/or criminal justice system preferred
  • Project management skills
  • Good IT Skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, MS Office) and ability to maintain effective records including monitoring and evaluation
  • Experience of delivering and facilitating, or cofacilitating groups
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well with partner agencies
  • Ability to work well as part of a team
  • Commitment to working in accordance with Heavy Sound's policies and procedures
  • Adherence to HMP Edinburgh policies, procedures and guidance
  • Full UK driving license
