    Job summary

    We are seeking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Assistant Psychologist to join the Low Secure Unit based in Taith Newydd, Bridgend.

    The post will support the Ward-based Clinical Psychologist and Principal Forensic Psychologist based in this service.

    Taith Newydd is a 28 bedded, adult male inpatient service for individuals with forensic mental health needs and difficulties. This service is part of the broader Recovery and Rehabilitation services across the SBUHB delivery unit.

    Main duties of the job

    *Band 5 Assistant Psychologist Post - Fixed Term Contract, 1 year*

    This post will include gathering information (including from structured interview / formal assessments), drafting summaries, undertaking psychological assessment, providing time limited highly structured interventions (individual and group work), contributing to the delivery of multidisciplinary programs and supporting audit and evaluation as required, under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist.

    The health board actively encourages and supports research and Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The post holder will have access to regular clinical supervision, reflective practice and a training package (to be jointly agreed upon following commencement of the position). We have strong links with local universities, including the clinical psychology programme at the University of Cardiff,forensic psychology course/s at Cardiff Metropolitan University and University of Bath. Applicants should have a previous experience of working as an Assistant Psychologist; and previous experience of working within an adult mental health or forensic setting is desirable

    Whilst the post is based within Taith Newydd, there will be opportunity to support and experience working with other psychologists and teams across the Rehabilitation & Recovery services.

    Job responsibilities

  • To assist the Registered Psychologist and other members of the Low Secure Team to deliver psychological assessment and therapy for their clients and their clients carers who may be under stress.
  • Under supervision, to assess people referred for psychological intervention, both prior to and after completing a psychological intervention.
  • Under the supervision of the psychologist you may be asked to provide 1:1 based psychological therapy.
  • You may be asked to co-facilitate therapeutic groups alongside a qualified mental health professional from the Low Secure Clinical Team. Your role will be to organise the logistics of the group, , allocate the patients, inform the patients of the venue and time, and assist in arranging this, prepare materials etc.
  • Within this role you may be required to work across the service areas, including the rehabilitation units, prison inreach and/or community forensic teams within the Specialist Locality by providing assessments and interventions and you will need to drive between these bases.
  • To assist the Registered Psychologist in evaluating group interventions, through the maintenance of a data base and subsequent statistical analysis to report on clinical outcomes. You will also record clinical contacts on the databases provided by the Health Board.
  • To assist the Registered Psychologist in the delivery and evaluation of training to other Health Board staff on psychological interventions and approaches. You will be able to create electronic presentations and deliver engaging training.

    Essential

  • An upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology. Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society
  • Previous experience as an assistant psychologist
  • Previous experience co-facilitating therapeutic groups.
  • High level interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills, including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information to clients, carers, and colleagues in a way that addresses psychological resistance
  • Able to work with a high level of autonomy.
  • Experience using computerised programmes for maintaining databases and data analysis (in particular SPSS and Excel).
  • Desirable

  • Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis
  • Previous experience of working with adults with mental health problems and/or forensic histories.
  • Previous experience of delivering training.
