This role, supported daily by clinicians across the service is responsible for responding to urgent queries for children and young people (CYP) who are open to the service, where either awaiting allocation to a clinician, or where the allocated clinician is not available to provide a timely response.

The CYPMHS duty worker will be office based with the Access Team wherever possible, working in partnership.

They will have a professional registration and will receive additional training in order to be equipped to carry out the role effectively with up-to-date evidence-based knowledge, policy and legislation.


  • To receive and provide regular clinical professional supervision and annual appraisal
  • To support colleagues with complex situations and onsite urgent clinical situations.
  • To support staff with safeguarding queries, seeking advice from safeguarding champions or leads where necessary.
  • Respond to urgent crisis calls.
  • Respond to crisis of open cases on CYPMHS waiting lists
  • Respond to services asking for consultations regarding referrals.
  • Respond to information requests
  • Respond to crisis for new referrals, offering consultation and signposting, advising to make a referral where appropriate.
  • Respond to queries around initial informal complaints.
  • To complete 7day followup appointments of CYP after presentation in crisis to acute hospitals or CYPMHS crisis hub and liaise with Access Senior as to next steps and with clinical decision making.
  • Where possible to speak to the CYP themselves; this could be at home or get consent and ask school to facilitate contact.
  • Support the Access team where available, under the direction of the senior Access clinician.
  • Respond to nonurgent enquiries about waiting lists, directing to the relevant clinicians holding the waiting lists.

  • To respond to schools when they are calling about urgent CYP concerns and seek CYPMHS guidance, to liaise with Hub worker?
  • Offer advice on CYP care to colleagues; professional; and nonprofessional staff in mental health services and appropriate agencies, and/or carers.
  • Working autonomously where able, recognising when needing to seek advice/support from other colleagues
  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team's policies and procedures.
  • Utilise research skills and core professional training for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the team/service.
  • Provide clinical supervision to junior colleagues and trainees, dependent on experience.
  • To undertake risk assessment and risk management with CYP, family and carers and where appropriate to provide advice to other professions on clinical aspects of risk assessment and risk management.
  • Evaluate care and support shared decision making about treatment options considering theoretical and therapeutic models and at times highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.
  • To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment and provide brief clinical advice to young children and families.
