Objective of the role

Be responsible for the complete technical assessment of incoming waste streams, generating legal and compliant documentation to facilitate the movement of waste.


Main Duties

  • Continuously learn, understand, and develop a knowledge base of the current disposal routes. Be aware of the market demand and problems to be able to offer commercially viable options for all incoming waste streams.
  • Identify sampling and data requirements needed prior to waste being accepted on site as outlined in the Appropriate Measures (formerly Sector Guidance Note 5.06).
  • Advise the sales team of any specific caveats that the waste must adhere to for the quotation to be valid.
  • Facilitate and log preacceptance samples, ensuring they are booked into the laboratory before arrival.
  • Understand the role that technical assessment plays in the efficient work flow at all sites. Maintain knowledge of treatment and transfer processes carried out at all RED facilities.
  • Ensure incoming waste is preaccepted in line with requirements set out in the Appropriate Measures, RED's environmental permits and all other relevant legislation.
  • Competently assess incoming waste streams, classifying materials using Technical Guidance WM3 and other relevant information sources such as MCL.
  • Guarantee that preacceptance is completed at least a day before the load arrives on any RED site.
  • Assess and interpret both internal and external chemical analysis of materials, including assessments for landfill inputs
  • Champion "right first time" culture in order to target zero nonconformities and zero accidents/incidents
  • Provide guidance to sales staff and customers on how waste should be segregated and packed in accordance with ADR regulations. Advise the sales team of any requirements for packing materials needed to do so and provide detailed packing lists that can be sent to customers if requested.
  • Consistently promote the importance of health, safety and environmental compliance. Report any incidents and near misses on Activ and provide suggested improvements regarding potential concerns.
  • Support ongoing feedback with Operations in relation to nonconforming or problematic waste and materials that are deemed to be unsuitable for their predetermined route.
  • Offer reasoned improvements and suggestions to systems and procedures currently in place

Generic Duties

  • Additional duties as requested by senior management in line with the capabilities of the role holder.
  • Support and contribute to RED Industries Group's overall objectives and aims, in line with the role holder's experience and competence.
  • Support and contribute to all aspects of "good" safety and health, daily awareness of safety issues and well being awareness.
  • Fully responsible for your own and others' health and safety
  • Ensure all incidents, observations and concerns are reported through an escalation process; solutions are identified and actions, in line with Company policy.
  • Ensure ideas for the improvement of safety are listened to and acted upon, involving the Health and Safety representatives and HR Management if necessary.
  • Ensure non RED employees (visitors, third parties and contractors) confirm to the Health and Safety Policy including using the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Raise a Corrective Action Report for any concern or improvement opportunity.
  • Compliance with all energy saving activities such as switching off lights and other equipment when not in use; switching photocopiers to standby mode, setting the thermostat at right setting; closing windows/doors when heating is on; when using, kettles fill up to what is required; and using hot water economically.
  • Compliance with water saving activities such as: turning off taps properly and reporting dripping taps and water leaks to Supervisor or Manager.
  • Compliance with our reduction in pollution activities, where possible reducing usage, and reusing or recycling waste; and handling all chemicals as per COSHH sheets; complying with safety rules in relation to minor spills (e.g. soak up and report to manager) and major spills (e.g. immediately report to a manager).
  • Compliance with emissions goals when driving company vehicles or otherwise driving on company business, do so in an economical manner i.e. choosing the shortest route to a destination where possible, ensuring that vehicles are properly maintained, driving in a nonaggressive manner and always within the speed limit.

Functional Knowledge:


  • Degree in Chemistry
