    Job summary

    A rare opportunity has arisen for a Physiotherapist educator experienced in Cardio/Pulmonary to undertake the temporary role of Lecturer in Physiotherapy, within the School of Nursing and Allied Health, joining our highly professional, committed and student focused academic community. This could be an ideal opportunity for someone looking to gain University experience within a gold rated teaching excellence framework. The post is for 2 days a week (, for up to 12 months to cover a period of maternity leave, based on the Chichester campus; we will consider a secondment.

    Main duties of the job

    As a Physiotherapy Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Allied Health, the working year will be divided between teaching, teaching-related administration and assessment. You will contribute to the delivery of Physiotherapy education enhancing the student experience on all physio programmes; providing students with a high-quality, research informed educational experience leading to an understanding of healthcare practice and the achievement of both academic and professional qualifications. You will also contribute to innovative interprofessional projects within the school and wider collaborations.

    Job responsibilities

    Function of the Post: Lecturers will contribute as a member of the teaching team in a developing capacity, with the assistance of a mentor and/or senior colleague if required, within the area of physiotherapy in the Institute of Applied Sciences. You will work collaboratively with both academic and clinical colleagues to ensure effective teaching and clinical placements to prepare students for work and enhance employability within physiotherapy.

    Principal Accountabilities: As a Physiotherapy Lecturer (Cardio/Pulmonary) in the School of Nursing and Allied Health, the working year will be divided between teaching, teaching-related administration, assessment and research in such proportions as may be decided by the Head of Area, after appropriate consultation, in accordance with the guidelines set out in the Terms and Conditions of Employment for Academic staff. You will contribute to the delivery of Physiotherapy education enhancing the student experience on both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Physiotherapy programmes; providing students with a high-quality, research informed educational experience leading to an understanding of healthcare practice and the achievement of both academic and professional qualifications. You will also contribute to developments in response to the professional and interprofessional agendas, and support collaborations with clinical colleagues to develop and prepare appropriate clinical placements including educational audit and clinical liaison. The role will also involve a contribution to the wider Institute of Applied Sciences, including income generation activities, student recruitment and, where appropriate, support other departments within the University.

    Learning and Teaching:

  • Support the delivery of teaching material - deliver either across a range of modules within a subject area and/or across developing areas within the department.
  • Deliver lectures and/or lead seminar groups using appropriate teaching methods, helping to identify areas where current provision needs revision or improvement.
  • Transfer knowledge in the form of practical skills, methods and techniques.
  • Assist with the development of the design and delivery of modules and assessment methods, working closely with colleagues on the implementation of assessment procedures, participating in the examination/assessment process.
  • Set, mark and assess work and examinations and provide effective and timely feedback to students.
  • Assist with the supervision of students projects, fieldwork and placements.
  • Use time outside of teaching hours to prepare well-constructed, varied teaching sessions, ensuring that content, methods of delivery and learning materials will meet the defined learning outcomes.
  • Seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.
  • Provide timely, constructive, formative and comprehensive feedback to students using all forms of communication/media.
  • Embrace the importance and value of engaging in the task of education and learning together with students at all academic levels to ensure an outstanding learning experience.
  • Work in partnership with students to enable them to become independent learners and researchers
  • Deliver high quality, effective and interactive teaching using a range of methods including face to face, blended and remote delivery if necessary.
  • Research, scholarly and income generating activities:

  • Engage in pedagogic and practitioner research and/or scholarly activities.
  • Conduct individual or collaborative scholarly projects with the support of a mentor/a senior colleague.
  • Develop learning materials in collaboration with colleagues and disseminate the results of scholarly activity.
  • Develop ideas for generating income and promoting the subject.
  • Contribute academic research publications as appropriate for an early career researcher including the publication of academic articles; conference papers; and/or edited volumes or monographs.

  • Develop and use listening, interpersonal and pastoral care skills and act as first line support to students, referring them as appropriate to internal and external services providing further help.

  • Support the quality of delivery within scope of own level of responsibility, referring more serious matters to others, as appropriate.
  • Manage projects relating to own area of work, in liaison with senior colleagues.
  • Use teaching resources and facilities as appropriate to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
  • Be responsible for administrative duties in own areas, managing projects relating to own areas of work.

  • Health and Safety:

  • Take responsibility for ensuring that workplace responsibilities within the University are carried out with full regard to, and in support of, the Universitys Health and Safety policies.     Qualifications

    Essential

  • A good relevant undergraduate degree with further professional or academic qualifications at Masters level in Physiotherapy.
  • Practicing Physiotherapist currently on HCPC register for minimum of 2 years.
  • Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).
  • Qualified Teacher Status/HE teaching qualification/willingness to undertake the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education/Academic Professional within an agreed timeframe.
  • Breadth of knowledge in critical life functions and organs and how their pathology impacts on physiotherapeutic interventions for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Knowledge of current initiatives underpinning cardio-respiratory physiotherapy.
  • Desirable

  • Working towards a Doctorate or willingness to undertake within an agreed timeframe.
  • Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
  • Membership of relevant specialist interest group(s) ( ACPICR, ICCrPT, ACPRC).
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Previous teaching/training experience, able to develop familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess learning in cardio-respiratory and -pulmonary related modules within physiotherapy programmes.
  • Able to identify the need for developing the content or structure of the subject area/module and make proposals on how this should be achieved.
  • Current experience of working in the NHS and/or HEI in the clinical area of cardio-respiratory and pulmonary conditions.
