    Description
    This post is a whole-time equivalent position at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, based at the Wythenshawe Hospital Site.

    The Applicant should have substantial experience and international standing in general thoracic surgery, including open & minimally invasive techniques spanning benign and malignant chest conditions.

    The Applicant is expected to be a highly successful collaborator with excellent track record in thoracic surgical research, a highly cited author and an experienced trialist.

    The Applicant is also expected to have a strong record in developing and delivering an educational portfolio including thoracic surgical fellowships, training programmes, conference/ symposia design and practical skills development.

    The post holder will be a collaborative member of a large team of substantive NHS thoracic surgical consultants and a broader workforce spanning Thoracic Medicine, Medical Oncology, Radiology, Pathology and Anaesthesia within the regional thoracic centre at the North West Lung Centre & North West Centre for Thoracic Surgery.

    The post is immediately vacant to join 9 substantive Consultant Surgeon appointments within the multi-speciality Directorate of Lung Cancer & Thoracic Surgery.

    There is a major focus on early detection, accelerating access to thoracic surgery, thoracic trauma and delivering expansion of the GM Lung Cancer Screening Programme.

    The Department of Thoracic Surgery is one of the largest in the UK with access to a high volume complex practice supported by a nationally leading multidisciplinary team.

    Extensive opportunities exist for service development, education and research and the applicant should expect to have substantial experience and track record for delivery of modern thoracic surgery including complex open & robotic resections.

    The Applicant should be of international standing, possess a strong research pedigree (including trials development, postgraduate degree supervision, publication record, grant attainment), and a demonstrable track record in education & training in thoracic surgery with innovative ideas for development.

    The applicant must possess a clear philosophy on their potential contribution to augment and advance the current departmental education and research portfolio with a timeline & metrics for success, and demonstrate a cohesive approach to service, education and research between all members of the surgical and extended team.

    The Applicant is expected to be of a suitable calibre to attract the University Award of a Manchester Academic Health Sciences Professorial Chair in Thoracic Surgery.
