Description

OBM are currently seeking applicants for the role of Nightshift Base Operative who can clearly demonstrate relevant experience and associated training to safely undertake cargo handling and vessel loading/offloading activities.


Job Purpose:


To undertake cargo handling operations, lifting operations, vessel loading/unloading operations and equipment inspections on all Quayside locations in accordance with company procedure.


Roles & Responsibilities

General

  • Support quayside operations and undertake cargo handling and vessel loading/unloading in line with operating instructions and HSSEQ standards.
  • Coordinate and control the safe and efficient loading/offloading of vessels.
  • Assist in the coordination and processing of all crane lifting operations and utilise transport to ensure vessels are turned around in accordance with Operations/Shipping plans.
  • Liaise with Quayside Supervisor, communicating any problems/delays with cargo operations
  • Ensure slings are not wrapped around sharp corners without suitable packing materials, or shortened using knots or attached to a fitting that is smaller than sling rope in diameter.
  • Stand clear while a load is lifted clear of the ground and landed, while slack is taken up with or without a load on the hook and must confirm to the Banksman/Signaller that he is clear.
  • Control the load in the air using tag lines/push pull poles where appropriate and ensure the load is not touched whilst being landed.
  • Be easily identifiable and distinct from the Banksman/Signaller.
  • Keep uninvolved personnel clear of the suspended load. Maintain housekeeping standards within the operating areas, ensuring cleanliness of lifting operations/deck areas.
  • Participate in and contribute to the daytoday interface between lifting operations and any other affected areas.
  • Assist with management and audits.
  • Assist in accurate control and tracking of all lifting equipment.
  • Follow all instructions (verbal or written) given by the Chargehand pertaining to lifting operations or associated activities.
  • Assist with the planning of lifting operations.
  • Ensure that formal procedures, standing instructions and safety standards are complied with at all times Continuously promote a proactive HSSEQ culture, ensuring participation and compliance with procedures, standing instructions and safety standards.
  • Undertake Live Safe Interventions when appropriate.
  • Proactively participate in identifying opportunities to improve customer service, processes and cost effectiveness.
  • Present a positive image of the company through first class service delivery and customer engagement and proactively support the wider team, including working additional hours, to ensure operational standards and deadlines are met. Mentor less experienced colleagues to ensure HSSEQ and operational standards are adhered to and correct inrole training is achieved.

  • OPITO Banksman/slinger Training
  • Stage 1

HSSEQ

  • In partnership with the HSSEQ department, ensure the continuous improvement of safety and environmental performance and compliance to all laws, regulations and industry standards/codes.
  • Reports all incidents or breaches of policy or regulations to the line manager.
  • Fully endorse the 'Stop the Job' policy and commitment to proactive intervention where an unsafe act or condition is observed.
  • Adherence to the integrated management system ensuring document control and improvements to key processes is maintained.
