About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF GIRO'S PERSUASIVE POWERS
The Adult Services team in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. We love it when our work touches lives.

Take Stepping to the Beat, our 3k walk, jog or run for people with learning or physical disabilities or Autism, their families and carers.

It's a life-affirming, music-based event Coreen and Claudia are massively proud of - and they were keen for people to spread the word.

So, imagine how thrilled they were when one of our residents, Giro, did just that.

Advocating for people with disabilities at a planning meeting for transport in London, he was proudly wearing his event medal.

And he decided to use it to encourage others. As he passed it around the room, Giro inspired lots more people with disabilities to get involved. Infectious enthusiasm goes a long way here.

The Role:

As a SEND Employment Adviser (EA) in our industry-leading Supported Employment service, you can make your own powerful contribution by changing the current employment prospects of people with disabilities - and in the process, you will transform lives.

These young people have a broad range of learning disabilities, physical disabilities and sensory impairments, and we work with those with complex needs and behaviours that challenge.

The concept of employment can seem unattainable to many of these teenagers, but with your support, you will bring students and employers together to challenge preconceptions and start healthy discussions on the value they can bring to the workplace.

With an overall focus on creating employment outcomes that will benefit our residents, you will help young people access meaningful paid work, thereby increasing their independence and autonomy.

This high-performing service is a vital part of our commitment to supporting inclusive and diverse work opportunities for everyone within our community.

As a member of this exceptional team, you will therefore help us reduce barriers to work by supporting young people in schools from Year 9 onwards.

Devising SMART action plans that will enable young people to explore the many paths that could be open to them, you will work with SEN schools to deliver creative career activities and enhance their approach to helping young people secure sustainable employment.

Encouraging schools to develop person-centred employment plans for every student, you will help them develop relationships with local employers in order to secure multiple opportunities for workplace encounters and work experience placements, and you will provide job coaching where required.

You will also support employers in creating the best possible work practices and environments that will bring out the best in SEN students, including guiding them on providing training and in-work support once these former students join their businesses.

Please refer to the
Job Description for more information.

About You:

To make the most of this exciting opportunity, you will need to have a background in a supported employment service in which you have provided training, education or employment support for vulnerable groups.

This will include transition planning and helping young people achieve their goals despite the challenges they are faced with, so you will also bring plenty of patience and great verbal and written communication skills to the role.

With experience of working with private, voluntary and statutory sector partners - and employers in all of these fields - you will have a proven track record in brokering jobs, and you will be capable of working in a target-driven environment.

We will therefore expect you to have a comprehensive knowledge of the issues faced by disabled people who want to work, and the associated legislation.

You will also be an inspirational leader with good people management capabilities.

If you have an NVQ/Diploma Level 2 or 3 or an equivalent in Advice and Guidance or Supported Employment, that would be ideal, though isn't strictly necessary.
