NUH is looking to appoint a Trust Grade doctor at ST4 or above level to support our General Medical/Diabetes ward at QMC.

The post is available to start from as soon as possible and will be for 12 months.


You will be based on ward C52 at the QMC campus working closely with consultants, other junior doctors, nursing and therapy staff.


The post holder will also contribute to the ST4+ General Internal Medicine rota at NUH which is cross-campus therefore MRCP and previous UK NHS experience are essential.

Main duties of the job

You will also contribute to the specialty ward referral rota alongside our existing registrars. This will involve seeing diabetes and endocrinology referrals from around the hospital and seeing emergency drop-in patients. The ward referrals are discussed with a consultant of the day.

Although this is not a training post, it should be possible for an enthusiastic doctor to map their experiences to many of the core curriculum programme competences as all aspects of the syllabus are relevant to this role.

There are ample opportunities for work based assessments from the supervising consultants. You will also be allocated a Clinical Supervisor.


In addition, there is a weekly diabetes and endocrinology departmental meeting and Junior Doctor teaching which you would be expected to attend and contribute to.

Although this is not a training post it should be possible for an enthusiastic doctor to map their experiences to many of the core curriculum programme competences as all aspects of the syllabus are relevant to this attachment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities


Post holders can expect:

  • To build upon postgraduate clinical experience
  • To develop further expertise in the identification and management of the sick patient
  • To gain experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of medical conditions, including making appropriate decisions regarding the need for admission, the development of strategies which might provide an alternative to admission and identifying where early discharge would be safe and appropriate
  • To further develop skills of history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigation and rational prescribing
  • To master a number of procedural techniques
  • To hone communication skills with patients, relatives and colleagues
  • To develop skills in managing time and conflicting priorities
  • To increasingly work towards independent practice at Registrar level, leading ward rounds, assessing patients, making decisions with Consultant support and supervision available at all times
Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with a Licence To Practise in UK
  • Full MRCP
  • IELTS core minimum 7.5 with no individual area going under 7.5 or minimum Grade B in all four sub tests of the Occupational English Test.
Experience

Essential criteria

  • UK experience of 12 months or more at Registrar level
  • Diabetes experience at foundation or CT level
  • Experience of working within the NHS
