Description of Department:

The Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) is part of the City of London Police's National Lead Force (Economic Crime).

IFED was established in 2012 and receives funding from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) to combat insurance fraud throughout England and Wales.

IFED has achieved over 611 criminal convictions for insurance fraud and over 320 years of custodial prison sentences.

With four operational teams, we now have vacancies for motivated Police and Detective Constables.


Our officers and staff have the autonomy to plan and manage their own investigations whilst supporting their wider operational team, overseen by a Detective Sergeant.


Officers and staff enjoy a considerable variety of work from complex organised crimes groups involved in 'Crash for Cash' activity using professional enablers through to high profile life insurance frauds and faster moving volume crime investigations.

The tremendous variety of work keep our staff motivated and engaged.


Essential Qualifications

  • Police/Detective Constable with PIP2 qualification or willingness to become PIP2 qualified.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigation of allegations of fraud referred to IFED from the insurance industry.
  • Collect and gather material, intelligence and evidence from a range of sources that are appropriate to the serious and complex nature of the investigation, record and retain evidence in a format that is evidentially admissible to support the investigative process.
  • Attend court and give evidence in criminal trials.
  • Plan and participate in arrest enquiries, searches and interviews around the country.
  • Record, retain and review material in compliance with CPIA.

Essential Skills

  • Must be a police officer outside their probationary period
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to manage a workload and plan operational activity
  • Ability to work with a team
  • Ability to work with partner agencies
  • Skilled in the use of use IT packages, systems and/or databases to fulfil role requirements.

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Fraud Investigation Model (FIM)
  • Experience in managing investigations
  • A working knowledge of financial investigations
