We are looking for two experienced Housing and Council Tax Benefit Officers to assist in a busy borough. We have an ambitious goal - to be the best council in the country.

You will be part of a team processing Housing and Council Tax Benefit claims, reporting to the team manager.


Skills essential for this post:

  • Experience of NEC, I-World, Enterprise, CIS, VEP, Outlook, Teams
  • Knowledge of current legislation relating to Housing and Council Tax Benefit
  • Experience in processing all types of Housing and Council Tax Benefit claims, including Appeals
  • Ability to follow procedures and maintain a high level of accuracy
  • Ability to manage own workload to meet set targets and work as part of a team
  • Effective written and verbal communications skills.

Our benefit teams work in a very busy environment.

We expect officers to process all types of claims with minimum handling and to manage their daily case load to meet service targets.

Attention to detail and accuracy is required.


Accurately assess all types of benefit claims in accordance with the work allocated by the Benefits Team Leader (or deputy).

To input relevant data accurately onto the computer system.

Verify claims fully in accordance with the law and Council policy and to write for further information as appropriate.

Develop and maintain a detailed knowledge of benefits and related legislation.

Maintain a high level of fraud awareness and refer cases to the Investigation Team as appropriate.


Deal with overpayment cases in accordance with the law, ensuring that where there is on-going benefit the correct recovery levels are applied.

Carry out quality control checks on all aspects of benefit assessments and written correspondence, including benefit notification letters.

Deal with correspondence from all sources including letters of appeal, complaints and general enquiries.


Assist in training of new staff in relation to procedures, legislation and the computer system as required by the Benefits Team Leader (or deputy).

Attend meetings to represent the Authority, taking a lead as appropriate. To be involved in project wok development groups or liaison work as requested.

Attend court as required to give evidence on a benefits case.


Use and assist others to use information technology systems to carry out duties in the most efficient and effective manner.

Collate and provide statistics as required.


Ensure all the services within the area(s) of responsibility are provided in accordance with the Council's commitment to high quality service provision to the customers.

Deal with customer's enquiries over the telephone or in person.


Work as a member of a team and assist other team members or other teams as directed in order to ensure that the work is kept up to date.

Make a positive impact at team meetings suggesting change and improvements as appropriate.

To undertake other duties commensurate to the grade of the post.

To work at other site locations as and when required.
