Chatham Station, home of the Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME), employs a diverse Team of Military Engineers, Civil Servants and contracted partners to deliver world class military engineer training to the British Armed Forces and our Allies.

An opportunity has arisen in our Welfare Team, who support our service personnel, their families and Civil Servants.


We are looking for a self-starter, with strong emotional intelligence and excellent communication skills wanting to make a positive difference.

We are an inclusive and dedicated team looking to a recruit a Executive Officer Unit Welfare Assistant. This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.


Job description:


The Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME), Brompton Barracks, is a thriving, lively workplace, with soldiers and civilians working side by side in support of training Royal Engineer soldiers.


Soldiers at 1 RSME Regiment, whether they are single or married, and their families, are primarily the responsibility of the Commanding Officer (CO).

The Welfare team assure the CO that any welfare concerns within Brompton Barracks and those families living just outside, are being dealt with expeditiously and to a positive outcome, wherever possible.

The Welfare Team are made up of three Civil Servants:

  • Welfare Officer.
  • Welfare Assistant.
  • Welfare Clerk.
It is the Welfare Assistant post that this advertisement refers.


The Welfare Assistant role is responsible to the Welfare Officer for dealing with any welfare cases relating to military personnel, their families, and any other professionals working within Brompton Barracks.


The role is primarily forward-facing:
- interviewing all parties to discuss welfare issues.
- writing case notes and keeping accurate records.
- signposting for further help and support through counselling services.

Your communication skills need to be excellent.

You will need to demonstrate strong integrity and uphold trust, ensuring confidentiality in all cases, and promote Equality and Diversity throughout.

The role is very rewarding. You will develop interpersonal skills that will support your life and relationships with people. It will require an understanding that you will be conducting interviews with people that are at their most vulnerable. You will need to show empathy and tolerance, complete with compassionate skills.

A car driving license would be highly desirable to support visits to personnel off-site.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Please be aware, due to the nature of this forward-facing role there is an opportunity to be fully embedded within a military environment, with limited opportunity to work from home.


Person specification:

Working to a Unit Welfare Officer (UWO), a Unit Welfare Assistant will:

  • Assist service personnel and families experiencing hardship.
  • Liaise with internal and external welfare agencies as required.
  • Maintain, control and dispatch as necessary case notes. Particular care must be taken with cases involving safeguarding issues and of mental health.
  • Maintain and coordinate a register of Service Families Accommodation (SFA) occupied at Chatham Station.
  • Run a monthly Housing Clinic and represent service family's problems to the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and contracted facilities management company.
  • Manage welfare funds, as the Welfare Fund Manager.
  • Manage the Lampard Community Centre Property Book, including audits.
  • In the absence of the Welfare Clerk, manage the day to day running of the Contact House.
  • Deputise for UWO during periods of absence.
  • All post holders will be required to complete all mandatory training and any role related training within a set time frame.
