An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Ophthalmic and Vision Science Practitioner join the Moorfields South Division to work within a variety of core and subspecialty clinics throughout the week.
This post covers two main areas of the Moorfields network:
- Moorfields South
- Croydon and St George's
Good communication skills to convey complex information to patients regarding diagnostic testing e.g. angiography, as patient co-operation is needed to complete fluorescein angiography/ICG imaging successfully.
Understanding of a range of digital angiography and imaging procedures requiring expertise underpinned by theoretical knowledge of the principles underlying fundus photography, digital angiography, autofluorescence imaging, optical coherence tomography and sonography.
Perform a range of clinical, diagnostic and imaging examinations including:
- Retinal imaging and image analysis using current standard techniques.
- Slit lamp imaging of anterior segment of the eye using tropical stains as appropriate.
- Clinical imaging of the external eye and ocular Adnexa.
- OCT imaging.
- Anterior Segment Photography.

Many of our clinicians are internationally renowned and have contributed extensively to the development of modern treatments.Perform a range of clinical, diagnostic and imaging examinations including:
- Retinal imaging and image analysis using current standard techniques.
- Slit lamp imaging of anterior segment of the eye using tropical stains as appropriate.
- Clinical imaging of the external eye and ocular Adnexa.
- OCT imaging.
- Anterior Segment Photography.
Ultrasound B scanning including:
- Ophthalmic ultrasound on follow up patients for the oncology service, writing a report on findings and accurately measuring the dimensions of lesions.
- Use relevant experience to have awareness of suspicious changes and seek further opinion when needed.
- Triage patients from the oncology service for appropriate imaging.
- Provide relevant images in preparation for proton beam radiation therapy.
- Work in busy Naevus and Oncology clinics autonomously.
- Recognise other general ophthalmic pathologies using Ultrasound.
- Contribute to the delivery of the Trust's strategic agenda
- Contribute to the development of the profession
- Promote the profession and represent Moorfields locally and at a national and international level
- Support the development and maintenance of policies, guidance, protocols and procedures
- Act as an advocate for ultrasound and photography
- Maintain standards and practice in accordance with Professional Code of Conduct guidelines, national guidelines and local Trust policies/guidelines.
- Be conversant with Trust Policies and guidelines and ensure compliance
- Be actively involved in the department and Trust wide clinical governance strategy. This will include participation in clinical governance activities at Division and Trust level
- Be aware of departmental risk and work with the Head of Department to reduce/mitigate risk
- Welldeveloped physical skills (manual dexterity)
- Responsibility for the safe use of expensive and highly complex imaging equipment
- Follow established departmental policies for imaging techniques and be guided by standard operating procedures and good practice. Be able to justify the need to vary from SOP when necessary
- Work within scope of practice
- Actively participate in departmental teaching and training sessions
- Actively participate in audit and continuously review own work to maintain and improve quality of imaging performed
- Identify the knowledge and skills needed for successful personal development
- Undertake all mandatory training including instillation of dilating drops
- Provide computer graphic services and operate several information systems relating to imaging
- Assist medical staff in downloading clinical images and printing
