An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Ophthalmic and Vision Science Practitioner join the Moorfields South Division to work within a variety of core and subspecialty clinics throughout the week.


This post covers two main areas of the Moorfields network:

  • Moorfields South
  • Croydon and St George's
Provide a highly efficient and readily accessible ophthalmic imaging service to all sub-specialties across the Trust and to A&E.

Good communication skills to convey complex information to patients regarding diagnostic testing e.g. angiography, as patient co-operation is needed to complete fluorescein angiography/ICG imaging successfully.


Understanding of a range of digital angiography and imaging procedures requiring expertise underpinned by theoretical knowledge of the principles underlying fundus photography, digital angiography, autofluorescence imaging, optical coherence tomography and sonography.

Making judgements involving a range of facts which require analysis and comparison to optimise images obtained during digital angiography (e.g. strategies to overcome small pupils, eye movement, cataract, blinking or a combination of these during fluorescein angiography)

Perform a range of clinical, diagnostic and imaging examinations including:

  • Retinal imaging and image analysis using current standard techniques.
  • Slit lamp imaging of anterior segment of the eye using tropical stains as appropriate.
  • Clinical imaging of the external eye and ocular Adnexa.
  • OCT imaging.
  • Anterior Segment Photography.
The post-holder must have at least 2 years' experience of performing the range of diagnostics in medical photography, as well as at least 2 years Ophthalmic Ultrasound experience

Perform a range of clinical, diagnostic and imaging examinations including:

  • Retinal imaging and image analysis using current standard techniques.
  • Slit lamp imaging of anterior segment of the eye using tropical stains as appropriate.
  • Clinical imaging of the external eye and ocular Adnexa.
  • OCT imaging.
  • Anterior Segment Photography.

Ultrasound B scanning including:


  • Ophthalmic ultrasound on follow up patients for the oncology service, writing a report on findings and accurately measuring the dimensions of lesions.
  • Use relevant experience to have awareness of suspicious changes and seek further opinion when needed.
  • Triage patients from the oncology service for appropriate imaging.
  • Provide relevant images in preparation for proton beam radiation therapy.
  • Work in busy Naevus and Oncology clinics autonomously.
  • Recognise other general ophthalmic pathologies using Ultrasound.
Other responsibilities

  • Contribute to the delivery of the Trust's strategic agenda
  • Contribute to the development of the profession
  • Promote the profession and represent Moorfields locally and at a national and international level
  • Support the development and maintenance of policies, guidance, protocols and procedures
  • Act as an advocate for ultrasound and photography
  • Maintain standards and practice in accordance with Professional Code of Conduct guidelines, national guidelines and local Trust policies/guidelines.
  • Be conversant with Trust Policies and guidelines and ensure compliance
  • Be actively involved in the department and Trust wide clinical governance strategy. This will include participation in clinical governance activities at Division and Trust level
  • Be aware of departmental risk and work with the Head of Department to reduce/mitigate risk
  • Welldeveloped physical skills (manual dexterity)
  • Responsibility for the safe use of expensive and highly complex imaging equipment
  • Follow established departmental policies for imaging techniques and be guided by standard operating procedures and good practice. Be able to justify the need to vary from SOP when necessary
  • Work within scope of practice
  • Actively participate in departmental teaching and training sessions
  • Actively participate in audit and continuously review own work to maintain and improve quality of imaging performed
  • Identify the knowledge and skills needed for successful personal development
  • Undertake all mandatory training including instillation of dilating drops
  • Provide computer graphic services and operate several information systems relating to imaging
  • Assist medical staff in downloading clinical images and printing
