Once Britain's Best-Kept Secret, Bletchley Park, a unique heritage site and vibrant tourist attraction has an exciting opportunity for a Lead Gardener to join their Site Works team, based at our site in Bletchley, Milton Keynes.

Bletchley Park Trust's Mission is to highlight the codebreaking achievements of Bletchley Park in World War Two, its role as a birthplace of computing, and its importance and relevance today.

As a Lead Gardener, your duties will be to:

To assist in maintaining the grounds and landscapes to a high standard expected by the public and others visiting the site.

This will include, but not limited by, the following activities where skills/training are considered adequate:

General grass cutting using small petrol or ride-on mowers
Strimming with petrol strimmer
Weed killing by spraying
Pruning, lopping and hedge cutting by equipment provided
General flower bed upkeep by digging, planting, weeding and watering
Leaf blowing, gathering and tidying
Jet washing where required
Lake and waterside maintenance
To ensure adherence to Health and Safety practices by the review and acceptance of risk assessments, continual safety training including correct use of personal protective equipment, safe use of gardening equipment, the recording of the correct use andstorage of pesticides and herbicides, awareness of noise and vibration hazards, working at height and lone working.
To ensure that appropriate gardening equipment is available and maintained in good working order.
To assist with preparations for special events onsite.

Duties may include erecting tents and marquees, building staging, assembling dance floors, distributing electrical cabling, refuelling generators and other associated duties.

To assist in small painting and maintenance tasks as required.

We are looking for a Lead Gardener with:

Recognised horticultural qualifications
Organised and methodical, used to overseeing cyclical schedules of ground keeping and landscape work.
Good communication
Understanding of plant and arboriculture regimes
Proficiency in the operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance machinery
Competent understanding of Health & Safety regulations
Herbicide qualifications are essential
Chainsaw qualifications are preferable but not essential

The following experience or knowledge is essential:

An experienced groundsman with thorough knowledge of plant and arboriculture maintenance/management
Team leadership skills
Knowledge of working in conservation areas
Knowledge of groundskeeping equipment
Up to date knowledge of Health & Safety
Knowledge of herbicide regimes and management
COSHH Management
Experience at working in a visitor focused site
Herbicide spraying licence

This is a permanent contract working 37.5 hours per week.

Usual working day will be 07:00 - 15:00, In return, the Lead Gardener will receive a salary of £23,000 - £27,000 per annum depending on experience, along with a company pension scheme, access to a BUPAhealthcare cash plan and 33 days holiday per annum, including statutory holidays.
